3 ESSI2 - 7 April 2011 Operational forecast of biogeochemical state of Med Sea 2009 MERSEA-IP FP6 project: 1 st pre-operational automatic chain for weekly 10-day forecasts of the biogeochemistry (chl, nutrients…) delivered via OGS website 2010 DORII FP7 project: prototype of Grid-assisted ocean application integrating instruments and numerical model 2010-today MyOcean FP7 project, evolution V0  V1: fully operational twice/week 10-day forecast integrated in the pan_EU MyO infrastructure  web catalogue Numerical tool: OPATM-BFM 3D parallel model offline physics-biogeochemical coupled forced by physical fields (provided by MFS-INGV OGCM); upgraded in MyO V1

4 ESSI2 - 7 April 2011 DORII project DORII = Deployment of Remote Instrumentation Infrastructure , 12 partners (PL,D,E,I,GR) from ICT and science communities, ~3 M€ budget Aims: –Grid-integration of remote instrumentation into European e- infrastructure –access to shared computational/storage resources –increase awareness within scientific community OGS application = a typical use case of Operational Oceanography (OO), based on remote observations and numerical models The information flow of OO (from sensors measuring the sea to visualization of numerical model output) can be integrated in the e- infrastructure  each step of the flow mapped onto the Grid DORII e-infrastructure allows users to handle the flow from observations data management to remote output visualization

5 ESSI2 - 7 April 2011 OGS in DORII project OGS application = Oceanographic and Coastal Observation and Modelling Mediterranean Ocean Observing Network (OCOM-MOON) is composed by: –observational module: MedARGO FLOATS managed by OGS  sensors on board: Sea-Bird CTD (  T, S, p, Lon, Lat, time) –computational module: OPATM-BFM (  Med biogeochemistry) physical forcings data OPATM-BFM biogeochemical model FLOAT MFS circulation model

8 ESSI2 - 7 April 2011 OGS in DORII project – Results Floats data interaction – via VCR, users can analyse the technical status of MedARGO floats, explore data of a particular float, visualize profiles (last + historical) of T/S, plot trajectory in Google Earth  improved float T/S data management from a single point of access + control of the technical status of the remote instrumentation OPATM-BFM model simulation - via WfMS, users can select a specific input date for IC, choose n° of steps and submit the simulation  improved control of the complex procedure usually requested to prepare a given simulation Visualization of model output - via WfMS or VCR, users can select the biogeochemical variable to be analysed using GVid  improved management of model output data (51 vars mutually interdependent, ~72GB/op.run) and remote 3D visualization of the variable fields, allowing plane section over the 3 spatial directions without local downloading Dissemination within MOON community

10 ESSI2 - 7 April 2011 MyOcean project Transition project that will conduct the EU operational oceanography community towards a fully operational GMES EU service , 61 partners (EU+Nor+Mar+Isr+Rus+Tur+Ukr) from operational oceanography & research communities, ~34 M€ budget Users heterogeneity: public and private organisations within the Member States (Met. & Env. Agencies, Ocean & Research Centres, Navies, Coast guards), commercial service providers, intergovernmental bodies in charge of Ocean protection Aims for the operational Ocean Monitoring and Forecasting: –user-driven sustainable service –products portfolio for physical and biogeochemical state of the ocean (observations, analysis, reanalysis and forecasts) –integration & harmonization of OO European resources OGS: MED MFC (WP9, biogeochem. forecast) + in-situ TAC (WP15, Argo floats)

13 ESSI2 - 7 April 2011 OGS in MyOcean project since 16 December 2010 fully operational phase V1 biogeochemical 10-day forecasts are released on Wed and Sat nominal product = daily averaged 3D concentrations of chl and nutrients (nitrates and phosphates) at 1/8° OPATM-BFM model embedded in the automatic operational chain implemented at CINECA  infrastructure involving OGS, CINECA, INGV and GOS-ISAC-CNR (chl satellite obs.) CINECA upstream = downloading of INGV physical forcing fields, data interpolation CINECA stream = production (parallel) CINECA downstream = products dissemination  MyOcean catalogue (68 authentication requests so far) OGS downstream = local archive (whole output – 51vars), surface chl from model and satellite  non-parametric statistics for NRT comparison

16 ESSI2 - 7 April 2011 Conclusions and ongoing steps DORII prototype remained a prototype BUT software developed in DORII is going to become part of the present local infrastructure (  VCR for model-on-demand) OPATM-BFM users will greatly benefit from the full model management (preparation of simulations: choice of IC/BC/grid/parameters…) naturally offered by the VCR MyO V1: fully operational forecast of Med biogeochemistry, integrated in the pan_EU MyO infrastructure Tools developed in R&D activities are now operatively ready for NRT comparison with GOS-ISAC- CNR satellite estimates, providing both nominal products  daily DT, and ad hoc internal products  pentads  CalVal website Data assimilation of surface chl under implementation (V2), embedding all the components of the infrastrucure
