8 European Framework Programme for Business FP7 UK Technology Strategy Board Driving Innovation 3 rd Call for proposals for the Health theme Publication of 3 rd call expected: 3 September 2008  Drawing on the budget for 2009: ~€ 593m*  There will in fact be two calls, published in parallel:  ‘FP7-HEALTH single-stage’€476m for most areas of the work programme expected deadline: 3 Dec (tbc)  ‘FP7-HEALTH two stage’€115m only for areas 1.1 and 2.1 expected deadlines for 1 st stage: 3 Dec indicative deadline for 2 nd stage: 22 April 2009 (* including €2m for a topic via the ERA-NET call in 2009)

20 European Framework Programme for Business FP7 UK Technology Strategy Board Driving Innovation Introducing two-stage submission/evaluation  Only for areas 1.1 & – High-throughput research and 2.1 – Integrating biological data and processes (large-scale data-gathering and systems biology)  All 7 topics are for large-scale integrating projects  One or more proposals can be funded per topic, provided they are of sufficient quality and depending on budget

21 European Framework Programme for Business FP7 UK Technology Strategy Board Driving Innovation Conditions for two-stage submission/evaluation  First stage:  Proposal size limited to 8 pages (5 pages max. on proposed research and expected impact + 3 pages max. to describe consortium & financial resources)  Only the coordinator needs to complete the ‘A forms’  Evaluation of 2 criteria only (S/T quality and Impact)  Higher thresholds (tbc)  Second stage:  only coordinators of proposals passing Stage 1 will be invited to submit full proposals for Stage 2  Evaluation on all 3 criteria, independently from Stage 1

23 European Framework Programme for Business FP7 UK Technology Strategy Board Driving Innovation Some considerations for application Good proposals take time to prepare! « the topic, the whole topic and nothing but the topic » Competition is tough : only the best projects get funded The consortium of partners must be excellent and appropriate for the tasks. Build the consortium around the science The proposal must address all the criteria Its the evaluators you will need to convince Respect the basic rules. (deadlines, number of participants, ceilings, page length, ethics…)
