11 What are we learning here? DICTION (word choice) is a poet’s most obvious yet most subtle form of expression. The CONNOTATIONS of words (diction) are partly from the Culture around us, and partly from your experiences and imagination. HOWEVER: Can we decide upon the TONE/MOOD based upon the DICTION a poet uses? What other evidence is there but the words!!?

12 Activity Write a short analysis of the way in which either poet creates meaning in their respective poem. Include comments on how the connotations and the sounds of the words help to convey the poem’s theme.

13 Plenary Reflect on the ‘sound of words’, the reason, perhaps, why we have some word associations. SHARP sounds and soft SOUNDS of phonetics, letter combinations and the importance of tone. REMEMBER that TONE is linked to the DICTION.
