WAVES Wave Behavior Created by Joshua Toebbe NOHS 2015

Wave Behavior Wave Types First lets look at the three basic types or shapes of waves that exists Transverse Longitudinal Surface Created by Joshua Toebbe NOHS 2015

Wave Behavior Transverse Waves An analog radio signal, A wave on a string, the stadium waves produced by sports fans… The wave propagation is perpendicular to media movement. Created by Joshua Toebbe NOHS 2015 http://www.acs.psu.edu/drussell/demos/waves/wavemotion.html

Wave Behavior Created by Joshua Toebbe NOHS 2015 Longitudinal Waves Think of a compression pulse being sent down a slinky, this also includes sound waves, some seismic waves, and what happens after an explosion. The wave propagation is parallel to media movement. http://www.acs.psu.edu/drussell/demos/waves/wavemotion.html

Wave Behavior Surface Waves This wave moves along the interface between two media (on the surface). Water waves, some seismic waves, the ripples that roll across you stomach when absorbing an uppercut punch. The wave propagation is both parallel and perpendicular to media movement. Created by Joshua Toebbe NOHS 2015

Wave Behavior Wave Motion The one thing that all waves have in common is that they transmit energy not matter The wave propagates The medium oscillates Created by Joshua Toebbe NOHS 2015

Wave Behavior Reflection Waves will be reflected off a surface, boundary or interface, but the degree to which they are reflected depends on the conditions. Fixed endOpen end Created by Joshua Toebbe NOHS 2015

Wave Behavior Reflection What do you think will happen when the wave hits the wall? What do you think will happen when the wave hits the post? Fixed endOpen end Created by Joshua Toebbe NOHS 2015

Wave Behavior Reflection Lets find out… Created by Joshua Toebbe NOHS 2015 http://phet.colorado.edu/en /simulation/wave-on-a-string

Wave Behavior Refraction If wave passes through a boundary or interface, its speed generally changes. If its speed changes, either its wavelength or frequency must also change. When transition from one medium to another, the wave usually bends. Frequency stays constant, wavelength changes. Created by Joshua Toebbe NOHS 2015

Wave Behavior Diffraction When a wave passes through a narrow opening, its shape changes. A wave originating from a point source, propagates radially outward. When a “flat” wave front passes through an narrow opening it is now acting a new point source. So the wave now propagates radially outward. Created by Joshua Toebbe NOHS 2015 www.phy.ntnu.edu.tw

Wave Behavior Superposition (interference) Waves often interact with one another. But unlike solid objects they can pass right through each other. When they do interference, or super position occurs. Created by Joshua Toebbe NOHS 2015 www.physics.ucdavis.edu
