NAIMIT Natural immunomodulators as novel immunotherapies for Type 1 diabetes Naimit

Start in Nov. 2009 (60 months) 14 partners (2 SMEs) Six countries EU funding: € 10.9 million April 2012: Progression of type 1 diabetes STOPPED IN MICE by oral administration of Lactococus lactis (an accepted therapy for other diseases) in combination of low-dose anti-CD3 antibody, with NO SIDE-EFFECT Innovative approach to render immune system tolerant to beta-cell Pilot in humans to start in 2014 Clinical trial to start after end of NAIMIT

Step 1 Read the call Naimit

FP7- HEALTH-2009-2.4.3-2 Novel immunotherapies for type 1 diabetes HEALTH-2009-single-stage (1)The project should focus on reversing autoimmunity in type 1 diabetic patients by modulating the immune system to a minimal degree and providing interventions for beta-cell protection and restoration. (2)Transfer of experimental findings into clinical application should be considered. (3)Interaction with ongoing projects in type 1 diabetes could be an asset to allow synergies. Funding scheme: Collaborative Project (Large scale integrating project).

Step 2 Find a nucleus of friends Naimit

Consortium partners Decio Eizirik, ULB, Brussels Chantal Mathieu, KULeuven, Leuven Sigurd Lenzen, MHH, Hannover SMEs Academic partners Coördinator Naimit

Step 3 Get a concept that fits the call Naimit

to bring together a consortium of leading European researchers spanning the field from genetics, through pancreatic beta-cells, DC and T-cell biology towards clinical interventions, allowing the development of novel and logical interventional therapies in T1D. Our concept is Naimit

Step 4 Bring in the right people Naimit

the right people Fitting the concept Willing to work together Experts- high scientific profile Gender balance Geographical balance SME’s that fit the purpose Naimit

Step 5 Get going Naimit

The birth of NAIMIT Sept 2 2008: brainstorm meeting in Leuven with first core (8 people) Sept-Oct 2008: – Registration at EC: NAIMIT – more people were invited – WPs decided- WP leaders identified – WP leaders write WPs- weekly telecons – Coordinator brings all together – All reread and give comments- continuous policing Nov 2008: Nucleus of friends finalises Final days: face to face finishing of project with 2 partners (version +30) Naimit

Support KU Leuven: – Start-up grant (VES) of 20 000 Euro to support application writing – Administrators KU Leuven give advise on overal project structure Local EU representatives give advise (Germany) Naimit

Push the button Naimit

Step 6 The negotiation Naimit

The negotiation Receipt of letter of acceptance Receipt of remarks of reviewers Scientific officer (SO) assigned F2F meeting with SO: points are discussed Letter addressing all remarks submitted- adapt project where needed (Annex 1) Getting the administrators on board…. – LEAR (Legal Entity Appointed Representative) – GPF (Grant Agreement Preparation forms) Stay in continuous contact with SO (get an experienced EC-grant participant administrator to head this admin part) Naimit

The negotiation 2 May 2009 Started 13 May 2009 First version of TA (technical annex = project revised) Fast Track allowed 14 May 2009 Second version of TA 27 June 2009: acceptance of TA by SO Consorium Agreement accepted 23July 2009: Grant Preparation Forms (GPF =formal intention declaration of the partner to participate in the project) submitted Naimit

The negotiation July-October 2009: going and coming emails on adaptations (eg. On SMEs: financial status review, adaptation on some wording in TA) 4 November 2009: Receipt of Grant Agreement Naimit

The negotiation 27 November 2009: Receipt of EC signed NAIMIT Grant Agreement One year after pushing the button…. Naimit

Step 7 Running the project Naimit

Running Naimit Year 1: – Identification of administrative coordinator – Launch: internal meeting- open meeting – Monthly phone conferences – Intensive exchanges – Make a website: open and closed – Dissiminate results! Following years: – Just let the flow go! – Trimestral phone conferences – Yearly meetings – Dissiminate results: peers and public Naimit

Running Naimit Follow up the administrative calendar Take enough time to get ALL reports…. – Scientific – Administrative Keep an eye on spending of partners in context of their activity Keep an eye on ‘relationships’ Stay in contact with SO Naimit
