2 The City of London  the oldest part of London with medieval streets  called Square mile (real area about 2.6 km 2 )  original city walls have disappeared but its gateways live on  in place-names (e.g. Aldergate, Ludgate, Moorgate)  in memorials (e.g. Temple Bar) obr. 1

3 The City of London  important financial centre (over 500 banks and insurance companies)  employs about 350,000 people (only 5,000 stay overnight) obr. 2

4 The Great Fire of London  started on 1 st September 1666  13,000 houses destroyed (including Town Hall and Stock Exchange)  Old St Paul‘s and 85 other churches burnt down  over 250,000 people got homeless obr. 3
