Veterans’ Study Findings UVSS

Nature of the Challenge O 71% of female veterans served after Vietnam O 46% of veterans sustained serious injuries O 44% find transition to civilian life very difficult O 37% suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) 11 *Research conducted Fall 2012

Nature of the Challenge Growing number of returning military personnel in Harris County – already the second largest veterans’ population in the U.S. O Increasing numbers returning from Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) and Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) conflicts Unique needs for this post – 9/11 veteran cohort 12

Striking Consistency in Findings O Transition from structured military life to unstructured civilian life is challenging O Difficulty translating military skills to civilian workplace O Perception that military service is not valued/feelings of isolation O Access to and coordination of services is limited O Ability to interact with other veterans is critical 13

Conversation Quotes “I spent two tours in Iraq and one in Afghanistan. I helped spread democracy and gave people a chance at freedom. Now, I’m a junior analyst looking at spreadsheets every day. I’m grateful, but it just can’t compare.” Afghanistan veteran 14

Conversation Quotes “In the military, your resume is pages long. You list every project you had a role in. In the civilian world, employers think a shorter resume is better. It is hard to translate what I learned in the military to some of the job openings I see online. When I do get an interview, I feel like all I can talk about is my military experience, and it seems like the interview goes downhill quickly.” Iraq veteran 15
