© 2013 Great on the Job13 POP QUIZ UNRAVELED Destination ✔ Back Story ✔ Connect the ✔ Dots Hi, my name is Jodi Glickman and I'm looking for a position in investment management. I've been managing my own money for the past three years; I love it and decided that’s what I wanted to do full time Before b-school, I worked for a start-up and spent time in marketing for a small tech company My analytical skills served me well in both environments but I’m more passionate about finance This opportunity is a great way for me to combine my natural talent with an industry that really speaks to me

© 2013 Great on the Job18 WHICH ONE ARE YOU? Career Switcher I loved biotech research but I wanted to make a change to help fund early stage high- growth companies Firm Switcher After five years at Fidelity, I'm looking forward to joining a smaller boutique investment firm Role Switcher I enjoyed strategy at Harrah's but I’m hoping to move into a corporate finance role and Starwood offers a great opportunity to make that leap… I liked investment banking as an analyst but I think equity research is a better fit for my skill set and personality
© 2013 Great on the Job19 DESTINATION: EXAMPLE LANGUAGE Broaden my perspective Expand my impact Leverage my industry experience Take a more hands-on role See the investment management world from the private client side Move from an advisory role to an execution role I'm hoping to get back to my roots and return to i- banking I want to focus exclusively on early stage high-growth companies Shift into a product group after three years in consumer retail
#1 REASON I DON'T LOVE YOU I DON'T BELIEVE YOUR STORY (IT'S NOT THAT YOU DON'T HAVE THE SKILLS) MYTH BUSTER
© 2013 Great on the Job21 BACK STORY: EXAMPLE LANGUAGE Relevant Experience Worked as a product specialist Learned about operations in the healthcare industry Worked as a consultant for start-ups in Silicon Valley Spent three years in corporate treasury at J&J Worked on post-merger integration as a management consultant Transferable Skills 1.Big picture thinker 2.Great with details 3.Quick learner 4.Technically proficient 5.Comfortable with ambiguity 6.Skilled project manager 7.Experienced with hiring and recruiting
© 2013 Great on the Job22 CONNECT THE DOTS EXAMPLE LANGUAGE This role is a great intersection of my previous experiences This is a logical progression from equity sales to research to banking I'm excited to take my skills and apply them them to the consumer lending business I think financial services is a natural fit for my engineering and math background This is a great way for me to leverage my experience in both Asia and the technology industry
© 2013 Great on the Job23 PRACTICE ROUND 2 Please give your neighbor your 30 second elevator pitch again: assume they work for your 1 st choice employer
HOW'D YOU DO? ( SCALE OF 1-10 )
© 2013 Great on the Job25 DIFFERENT PERSON: DIFFERENT PITCH My job is to choose, of all the potential stories to tell a jury, which one will resonate the most. —Attorney
© 2013 Great on the Job26 MY PITCH: BANKING Destination Back Story Connect the Dots I'm a big picture thinker by nature and a numbers person by training. I think banking is a great combination of the two I was actually a Peace Corps Volunteer in Chile and a policy analyst at the E.P.A., so this is a major departure for me I loved my finance and strategy classes, I excelled in both and I think banking is a great intersection of the two
© 2013 Great on the Job27 MY PITCH: CONSULTING Destination Back Story Connect the Dots Management consulting provides an amazing opportunity to combine big picture thinking with tightly honed problem solving skills– I love the idea of working across business and industries to get a diversified set of experiences As a policy analyst at the EPA and a Peace Corps Volunteer in Latin America, I had the opportunity to hone my problem solving skills in challenging and non-traditional environments Given my unique background and perspective and my tendency toward analytical thinking, I think management consulting is a great opportunity to apply my skill set and experience
© 2013 Great on the Job28 MY PITCH: GENERAL MANAGEMENT Destination Back Story Connect the Dots I'm very interested in Ford’s general management program Before business school, I coordinated voluntary partnership programs at the EPA. I worked closely with the automotive industry on energy savings, waste reduction and water efficiency initiatives After spending time in the public sector pushing private sector reform, I’m ready to see the other side of the coin and push reforms from the inside out versus the other way around…
