3 Integrated Medical Curriculum -ICEE  Appropriate o Greet the patient by his/her name. o “Hello, Mr. Jones……”  Inappropriate o “Hello, Jack” o “How’s it going?” o Omitting the greeting entirely. 3 of 15 Greet the patient by his/her last name

4 Integrated Medical Curriculum -ICEE  Appropriate o My name is Jack Jones. I’m a 4 th year medical student.  Inappropriate o I’m Jack…. o I’m going to examine you today…. 4 of 15 Introduce yourself by your last name

5 Integrated Medical Curriculum -ICEE  Appropriate o I’m a fourth-year medical student.  Inappropriate o ….I’m Dr. Smith… o ….I’m student Dr. Smith…. o Omitting your title/level of training. 5 of 15 Introduce yourself by title

6 Integrated Medical Curriculum -ICEE  Appropriate o “I’m working with the doctors here and I’d like to speak with you (examine you) about your problems today. Is that alright?”  Inappropriate o “How’s it going?” 6 of 15 Indicate the purpose of the encounter

7 Integrated Medical Curriculum -ICEE  Appropriate o The pain is sometimes called angina pectoris. The pain occurs when your heart is not getting enough oxygen.  Inappropriate- avoid technical terms w/o explanation o You most likely have angina. o Your problem is myocardial ischemia. 7 of 15 Use language appropriate for the patient

9 Integrated Medical Curriculum -ICEE  Appropriate o I realize these questions may seem personal o I want you to tell me if something I do during your physical exam is painful.  Inappropriate o Not washing hands before physical exam o Not draping patient appropriately 9 of 15 Anticipate Physical and Emotional Comfort

11 Integrated Medical Curriculum -ICEE  Appropriate o Why have you chosen to follow a vegetarian diet? o Do you drink alcoholic beverages? o Do you smoke?  Inappropriate o Have you made any other unusual lifestyle changes? o Eliminating meat is going to create some problems for you. o Are you a drinker/smoker? 11 of 15 Ask questions in a nonjudgmental manner
