WE WANT TO BE THE BEST

GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE

AMERICA IS BECOMING LESS EDUCATED While the U.S. leads developed nations in the percent of its population ages 55 to 64 with an associate degree or higher, it’s ranking falls to 10 th for the 25 to 34 age group. Percent of Adults with an Associate Degree or Higher by Age Group Source: “Divided We Fail” (Moore and Shulock 2010)

IT’S EVEN WORSE FOR CALIFORNIA The state’s ranking in the share of the population with a college degree falls steadily with each younger age group Age Group Rank among States In Share of Population with Associate Degree or Higher 65 and older3 rd 45 to 6414 th 35 to 4426 th 25 to 3431 st California is Becoming Less Educated than Other States Source: “Divided We Fail” (Moore and Shulock 2010)

“WE NEED 5 MILLION MORE DEGREES AND CERTIFICATES ”

WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT FOR STUDENTS? HUGE EARNINGS BOOST! Source: ARCC 2010 Reports

1 Faculty identifies struggling students 2 Students receive Early Alert 3 Students see tutor or counselor and succeed in class EARLY ALERT—HOW IT WORKS

EARLY ALERT INCREASED COURSE SUCCESS Course Success Rates of Students who Received an Early Alert by Whether they Followed the Advice to Get Tutoring Source: “Early Alert Program Chaffey College” (Wurtz 2009)

EARLY ALERT—FACULTY LIKE IT Source: “Early Alert Program Chaffey College” (Wurtz 2009)

EARLY ALERT—STUDENTS LIKE IT *Helpfulness scale ranges from 1 to 7, 1 being least helpful and 7 being most helpful Source: “Early Alert Program Chaffey College” (Wurtz 2009)

LINKED COURSES “After reading the book, you see math everywhere. It’s in nature. Something was there that I didn’t realize. At first I didn’t think I would need to know ‘x equals something.’ I didn’t see that it applies everywhere, and now I do.” “After reading the book, you see math everywhere. It’s in nature. 21 MANY IDEAS OUT THERE

START WITH LOW HANGING FRUIT Only 27% of Transfer Students Received an Associates Source: “Divided We Fail” (Moore and Shulock 2010)

MANY STUDENTS DON’T REALIZE VALUE OF ASSOCIATES’ DEGREE Source: “With Their Whole Lives Ahead of Them” (Public Agenda 2009)

MANY TRANSFER STUDENTS DON’T EARN A BACHELORS Source: “Creating a Student Centered Transfer Process in California” (Moore and Jensen 2009)

IDENTIFY STUDENTS THAT HAD ENOUGH CREDITS FOR AN ASSOCIATES

REVERSE ARTICULATION AGREEMENTS SJECCD & SJSU Transfer Credits needed for an Associates

REVERSE ARTICULATION AGREEMENTS Huge Boost in Associates Degrees from Reverse Articulation Agreement! San Jacinto College (Texas) Source: IPEDS and University of Texas in Clear Lake Website

WE NEED TO INCREASE CERTIFICATES Certificates - a major part of 2020 goal Increased Earnings (33% boost in CA study) Quicker to complete than Associates

GOING TO WORK AND SCHOOL AT SAME TIME IS #1 REASON FOR DROPS Source: “With Their Whole Lives Ahead of Them” (Public Agenda 2009)

FOR THOSE THAT DROP, MOST WANT TO COME BACK BUT CAN’T BECAUSE OF WORK Source: “With Their Whole Lives Ahead of Them” (Public Agenda 2009)

IDENTIFY STUDENTS THAT HAD ENOUGH CREDITS FOR A CERTIFICATE

STUDENTS CAN USE CERTIFICATE TODAY ON ROAD TO ASSOCIATES

INCREASE NUMBER OF CERTIFICATE PROGRAMS

CREATE LOCAL PARTNERSHIPS

BRIDGE FROM WORKFORCE INSTITUTE TO CERTIFICATE AT SJCC

LET’S SWITCH GEARS… We’ve been looking at students on final stretch of their community college experience Let’s go back in time to when those students start out

MOST CCC STUDENTS NEED DEVELOPMENTAL EDUCATION Although many find ways to avoid developmental education, 50% of CCC students take at least one developmental course over six years Only 28% were ready for transfer level English Only 16% were ready for transfer level Math English Transfer/College Level28.0% 1 Level Below33.9% 2 Levels Below26.3% 3 Levels Below9.2% 4 or more Levels Below2.7% Math Transfer/College Level16.4% 1 Level Below22.6% 2 Levels Below24.4% 3 Levels Below23.1% 4 or more Levels Below13.6% Source: “Something’s Got to Give” (EdSource 2010)

WHAT OTHER INNOVATIONS ARE OUT THERE?

WHAT HAPPENS TO DEVELOPMENTAL ED STUDENTS (NATIONAL PROBLEM) Most students in developmental courses never make it to college level courses Only 24% of students placed at three levels below transfer level English go on to pass transfer level English Course Only 10% of students placed at three levels below transfer level Math go on to pass transfer level Math Course Source: “Promoting Gatekeeper Course Success Among Community College Students Needing Remediation” (Jenkins et al 2009)

WHAT HAPPENS TO DEVELOPMENTAL ED STUDENTS (LOCAL PROBLEM) 18285 (47%)2438 (62%)526 (79%)416 (73%)6 (27%)7 (21%)23 (38%)97 (53%) Not Persisting Success No Success 3 Levels Below2 Levels Below1 Level BelowTransfer Level Students enrolled in 3 Levels Below Transfer Persistence Rates for Basic Skills Math Progression Through Transfer For example, at Evergreen, of the 182 students who started at 3 levels below transfer level in Math, only 16 went on and succeeded in college level math, or just 9%. Source: “Applying the CUE Equity Model at Evergreen Valley College” (Center for Urban Education 2009)

LENGTH OF THE PIPELINE HURTS STUDENT MOTIVATION One student commented : “ If you take a placement test and find out you’re one or two classes behind, that’s okay—three years [to earn an associate’s degree]. That’s if you place right below transfer-level classes. If you place further down, you’re going to be here for a while. And I think that’s the community college’s way. I see people that have been here, it seems like, forever and they’re kind of stuck here.” Another student said: “You don’t really know that it’s going to take that much longer to transfer… If you put that in someone’s mentality, they’re going to be [thinking], ‘Oh, it’s going to take forever.’ And that’s when they say, ‘This is not for me,’ and they’re going to drop out.” Source: “One Shot Deal?” (Venezia et al 2010)

Two-semester sequence of integrated reading and writing instruction (8 units) Accelerated one-semester reading-and- writing course (4 units) ACCELERATION AT CHABOT What’s the outcome? Source: “Exponential Attrition and the Promise of Acceleration in Developmental English and Math” (Hern and Snell 2010)

ACCELERATION—DOUBLE NUMBER OF STUDENTS WHO PASS COLLEGE LEVEL Source: “Exponential Attrition and the Promise of Acceleration in Developmental English and Math” (Hern and Snell 2010)

ACCELERATION: INCREASE % OF COLLEGE LEVEL MATH AND ENGLISH COURSES

BRINGING INNOVATIONS TO SCALE (ONE OF THE PRINCIPLES OF CLASS)

PROVIDE SUPPORT FOR COMMITTEES AND TASK FORCES

EMPOWER FACULTY AND STAFF TO SPREAD GOOD IDEAS WITH EVIDENCE OF SUCCESS

IR AND IT UNDERSTAFFED TO HANDLE NEW WAVE OF DATA REQUESTS
