1 Atoms 1) Describe what an atom is.
Lesson aims:- 1) Describe what an atom is. 2) Compare the atoms in an element and non-element. 3) Give the symbols of some of the main elements. 4) Describe how atoms join to each other to make elements and non-elements.

2 Elementary dear Watson!
What is an atom? The word atom comes from the Greek word ‘atomos’ and means ‘can’t be divided up.’ Atoms are particles that cannot be broken down into anything simpler. Elementary dear Watson! Fe

3 Each atom has its own symbol found on the Periodic table.

4 Elements & Non-Elements
Elements contain one type of atom Mg Mg Mg Mg Mg Mg Mg Mg Non-elements contain different types of atoms Cu O

5 Joining atoms together
Atoms can be joined (Bonded) together to make elements and non-elements. Make some element and non-element molecules using the molymod kits provided. RULE: No balls (atoms) should have any holes without sticks in them. Were any models the same? You should see how a few ‘building blocks’ (atoms) can make a whole range of different substances. Can you identify which models represent elements and which non-elements?

6 Task Read pg80-81 2) Answer Q1 and 2 on pg 80
3) Complete ‘Summary Q’s’ on pg 81 4) Define keywords on pg 81
