1 Imperial Valley Discovery Zone “Inquiry Learning in Science” Plan/Conduct an Investigation to Determine if Plants Need Sunlight / Water to Grow 2-LS-2-1 prepack Hello boys and girls, Before coming out to the Discovery Zone why not introduce yourself to some of the cool words we will be using. IVDZ

2 variable – any item, factor, or condition that can be controlled or changed. If I walk I use less energy than if I run. So the speed that I move is a variable for the amount of energy I use. So variables can change. Many times you have control of it, but sometimes you do not! Imperial Valley Discovery Zone “Inquiry Learning in Science” We can change the amount of energy we use if we walk or run. So the amount of energy we use is variable. The sky is variable since sometimes it is cloudy, or sunny, or rainy, or snowy…. 2-LS-2-1 prepack

4 fair test – You conduct a fair test by making sure that you change one thing or factor at a time while keeping all other things or conditions the same. Maria wants to test how high different balls will bounce so a fair test for Maria will only change the type of balls tested. What would be some things that wouldn’t change in Maria’s experiment for a fair test ? 1.How hard you let it go. 2.The floor it bounces on. 3.How aired up it is! 4.The height you drop it from. 5.Can you think of anything else? I can’t!

5 control – to do a side-by-side experiment where everything is normal giving you something to compare to. (With the control you see what the normal condition is) Imperial Valley Discovery Zone “Inquiry Learning in Science” IVDZ She treated the control mouse the way she usually did so she could compare the others who got medicine to it. 6 limit – to control or change the amount of a resource. IVDZ Imperial Valley Discovery Zone “Inquiry Learning in Science” The farmer limited the amount of fertilizer he put on his crops. 2-LS-2-1 prepack The farmer is limiting the fertilizer he gives to some crops. The farmer wants to know how giving some crops less fertilizer will change them.
