Local vs. State Control Dan Crump, American River College Dolores Davison, Foothill College Michelle Pilati, Rio Hondo College ASCCC Faculty Leadership Institute June 2010
What does “local vs state” mean to you?
How Do We Function? When are we a statewide system? and…. when are we a local system of 72 districts and 112 colleges?
Rock, Mineral, Vegetable.. No, no, no. That’s not what I meant! IS IT STATE? or IS IT LOCAL?
State or Local? Graduation requirements Disciplines List Minimum Qualifications Equivalencies
State or Local? Assignment of Courses to Disciplines New programs GE Assessment for Placement
State or Local ACCJC Standards 50% Law 75:25 Textbook Prices Collective Bargaining Agreements
Sometimes….. We need to take a hard look within ourselves and decide--- There are times when we work together for the good of students, and There are times when the needs of students are best met with local solutions.
Another Hard Look Within (and need for serious dialogue) “Local Control” does not mean that a college should be permitted to do whatever it wants without any oversight or regulation, just as.. “Academic Freedom” does not mean that faculty (statewide or local) can do whatever they darn well please.
Questions? New ways we should work as a “system”?
