2 WHAT ENGAGES HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS?

3 Established relationships with students Talked to students about Attendance and what were their issues surrounding their attendance Had several students video themselves coming to school (Awarded a Senior w/Laptop, gift cards for other two students) Worked with Senior Counselors to develop of Wall of Fame for Senior’s who received acceptance letters to college Took several Senior’s to community meetings focused on PPS Took several Senior’s to Public Hearings to speak out on RISE Teacher’s Evaluations Learned about Brashear’s attendance policies/suspensions/detention/etc… Worked on an Attendance Team with Teachers, FACE Coordinators, Principles and staff members Attended conferences, meetings, seminars to become more familiar with issues and polices surrounding attendance

4 2014 – DESIGNED PROGRAM ESTABLISH MEANINGFUL RELATIONSHIPS WITH STUDENTS TRUST DESIGNED THE PROGRAM AS “STUDENT LEAD” – BRASHAEAR ATTENDANCE AMBASSADORS – LISTENED TO THEIR IDEAS – SUPPORTED THEIR IDEAS – ENCOURAGED THEIR CREATIVITY – HAD A PLAN BUT ALLOW THE STUDENTS TO DEVELOP A MORE DEFINED PLAN PARTNERED WITH DIFFERENT GROUPS ALREADY COEXISTING IN THE SCHOOL WORKED WITH AND INVOLVED TEACHERS, STAFF, AND ADMINISTRATION INVOLVED PARENTS AND FAMILIES

5 DESIGNED PROGRAM (CON’T) NETWORKED – WORKED WITH COUNSELORS, TEACHERS AND STAFF TO MEET STUDENTS, THEN CONTINUED TO MEET STUDENTS THROUGH THEIR FRIENDS, VOLUNTEERED TO GO ON FIELD TRIPS, ATTENDED EVENTS, FOOTBALL GAMES, BASKETBALL, SENIOR RECOGNIATION DAYS, SUPPORTED FUND RAISERS, JOINED PTO, ATTENDED PSCC MEETINGS AND EXCELLENT FOR ALL MEETINGS CONVERSATIONS – HUNG OUT IN COUNSELORS SUITE AND TALKED WITH STUDENTS ABOUT WHAT THEY WANT, NEED AND ABOUT THEIR FURTURES MET PARENTS THROUGH STUDENTS

6 SPEAD THE WORD POSTED BE THERE POSTERS IN THE SCHOOL BUS’S INFORMED BUS DRIVERS ABOUT THE CAMPAIGN AND ENCOURAGED THEM TO SUPPORT THE CAMPAIGN BY ENCOURAGING STUDENTS POSTED BE THERE POSTERS IN EVERY CLASSROOM, DESIGNED A SCRIPT FOR TEACHERS TO ANNOUNCE DURING ADVISORY PERIODS SO THAT ALL TEACHERS, STAFF AND STUDENTS KNEW WHAT THE “BE THERE” CAMPAIGN WAS AND KNEW ABOUT THE KICK OFF EVENT “BE THERE BRASHEAR” WHERE STUDENTS TOOK THE PLEDGE TO BE THERE ESTABLISHED A GROUP OF STUDENT “BE THERE BRASHEAR” ATTENDANCE AMBASSADORS. GROUP CONSISTED OF STUDENTS WHO VOLUNTEERED TO HELP SPEAD THE WORD AND PROMOTE GREAT ATTENDANCE THROUGHOUT THE SCHOOL YEAR. THESE STUDENTS WERE ALSO REQUIRED TO IMPROVE ON THEIR ATTENDANCE AND MAINTAIN A 2.5 GPA OR HIGHER. THESE STUDENTS WERE TO NOT ONLY PROMOTE GREAT ATTENDANCE BUT ENCOURAGE OTHER STUDENTS TO IMPROVE ON THEIR ATTENDANCE.

8 KICK OFF EVENT STUDENTS TOOK THE PLEDGE TO “BE THERE” BY SIGNING BANNERS DISPLAYED AND MANNED BY STUDENT AMBASSADORS, TABLES WERE SET UP 9 TH THROUGH 12 TH GRADE MADE IT A COMPETION TO SEE WHICH GRADE HAD THE MOST SIGNATURES FRESHMAN WON

10 WHAT WOULD MOTIVATE YOU TO SHOW UP AT SCHOOL? TEACHER’S WHO REALLY CARE A BETTER EDUCATION FRIENDS IF THE ADULTS WOULD LISTEN TO USE MORE BEING INVOLVED IF MY PARENTS WERE MORE INVOLVED BETTER FOOD PEOPLE WHO REALLY CARE FAIRNESS BETTER HOURS BETTER TRANSPORTATION IF TEACHERS DID THE WORK THEY ARE SUPPOSE TO DO

11 WHAT FACTORS STOP YOU FROM ATTENDING SCHOOL TEACHER’S DON’T MAKE IT FUN OR EXCITING TOO MUCH BOOK WORK DRAMA BEING UGLY SLEEP BORING IT’S DEPRESSING, TEACHER’S MAKE YOU FEEL STUPID WORKING TOO LATE OVERWHELMED WITH TOO MANY AP CLASSES TOO EARLY, CHANGE TIME TO 9 WAKING UP TOO LATE, MISS BUS I HAVE TO BABYSIT MY SISTER AND BROTHER STRESS FAMILY PROBLEMS DRUGS

12 GIVE THEM RECOGNITION Created a “Be There Brashear” Wall with photos of Attendance Ambassadors Recognize students for “Perfect Attendance” and for noteworthy Improved Attendance, (moving from one category to the next) Severe to Chronic, Chronic to At Risk and At Risk to Satisfactory Create Student Videos Recognition: – Award Assemblies – Photos on Be There Brashear Wall – Awarded Certificates for Perfect/Improved Attendance – Awarded Gift Cards for Perfect Attendance
