April 1 - 7, 2012 “If the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet to warn the people and the sword comes and takes the life of one of them, that man will be taken away because of his sin, but I will hold the watchman accountable for his blood.” (Ezekiel 33:6, New International Version) Weekly World Watch Andy Walton’s To skip the introductory slides and go straight to this weeks developments click here. 2 What is a Weekly World Watch? Israel: The continuing conflict in the Middle East and focus on Jerusalem. Europe: Its developing union, both political and religious. Russia: Its return to anti-Western ways as Bible prophecy’s “king of the north.” The UK and the US: Bible prophecy’s “king of the south.” Moral standards in decline and violence on the increase. WWW presentations in PowerPoint can be ordered as audio/visual CDs by clicking here. Move your mouse to place the cursor on the blue link and click.clicking here The idea is simple. It is to look at current events and compare them to events spoken of in the Bible.. I hope to build up a picture of God’s hand working in the affairs of this world. God is bringing about a day when all nations will be gathered to Jerusalem to battle. At that time God will send His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, back to this earth. Jesus will then establish God’s kingdom on earth. This kingdom will last for ever. This is our hope and the reason we watch. Increasing natural disasters: including earthquake, famine etc The following six themes will appear repeatedly in WWW:

HEADLINE EVENT COMMENT News Photo The source of the headline and the date are included. Each WWW looks at a few key developments that have happened during the past week. It is in no way meant to be exhaustive – just a look at those events I saw as significant from a Biblical point of view. What is in a Weekly World Watch? BIBLE QUOTE This is normally one verse which backs up why the event that has occurred is interesting from a Biblical perspective. Please read in its context. Unless stated otherwise, all quotes are from the King James Version. (Book, chapter, and verse) This is straight from a news report that caught my eye because it looked significant from a Biblical perspective, usually that of prophecy. Every WWW event slide has the following format. To reveal each block of text just left click your mouse or press the space bar. You control when it appears. This is the reporter’s description of the event. It is always a direct quotation from the news report and reflects the understanding of the reporter and editors. This is my comment on why the event is interesting to a Bible student. The intention of the WWW is to offer brief Biblical perspectives without going into detail. If more detail is desired, please me:

he Syria crisis: UN chief Ban Ki-moon condemns attacks The head of the UN, Ban Ki-moon, has condemned the Syrian government for fresh military assaults despite agreeing to a deal to end the violence. Mr Ban said the 10 April ceasefire deadline was "not an excuse for continued killing" by forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad. Activists say at least 100 people have been killed over the past two days as troops intensified operations. Earlier, Turkey said it may need UN help after a surge in refugee arrivals. After speaking to Mr Ban, Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said the rate of refugees had doubled since Mr Assad agreed to implementing the UN-Arab League plan. The six-point peace plan, mediated by envoy and former UN chief Kofi Annan, envisages cessation of armed violence by all parties from 10 April, with a full ceasefire on 12 April. However, the Syrian opposition, the US and many regional countries have expressed scepticism that Syria is committed to it. BBConline, April 7, 2012 EVENT COMMENT Hamath [Homs] is confounded,: … there is sorrow on the sea; it cannot be quiet. Damascus is waxed feeble,.., and fear hath seized on her:.. This comes next… Therefore her young men shall fall in her streets, and all the men of war shall be cut off in that day, saith the LORD of hosts. And I will kindle a fire in the wall of Damascus, and it shall consume the palaces BIBLE QUOTE Kofi Annan has given Syria until the 10 th April to pull all troops out of the cities. He then wants a full ceasefire on 12 th April. The UN security council has backed this deadline. The Assad regime therefore is intensifying its attacks all across Syria. 2,800 refugees fled across the border on Thursday alone – the highest single day figure of the year- long uprising. Turkey has now appealed to the UN and sought international backing to mount a military cross-border incursion to set up a buffer zone. So what happens next? Will the civil war come to an end in this coming week? Will there be peace in Syria? Surely not. The Bible predicted this conflict. It even predicted which cities would feel most of the pain in the uprising (Homs). The Bible then explains what will happen next. The Syrian army will fall and be destroyed. Fire is coming on Damascus that will consume the ruling palaces. This will happen – and perhaps soon… (Jeremiah 49:23-27)

Russia: Syria opposition will not defeat Assad's army Syria's opposition will never defeat President Bashar al-Assad's army even if it is "armed to the teeth," Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov was quoted as saying on Wednesday. "It is clear as day that even if the Syrian opposition is armed to the teeth, it will not be able to defeat the government's army," Interfax quoted Lavrov as saying while on a visit to the ex-Soviet nation of Azerbaijan. "Instead, there will be carnage that lasts many, many years – mutual destruction," said Lavrov. Russia has emerged as the Syrian regime's closest ally and has previously sought to protect its Soviet-era trade partner against Western sanctions and possible foreign military intervention. But Moscow has stepped up its criticism of Assad in recent weeks and has backed along with Arab and Western nations the six-point peace plan put forth by UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan for resolving the year-long crisis. Daily Telegraph, April 4, 2012 EVENT COMMENT the king of the north shall come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, and with horsemen, and with many ships; and he shall enter into the countries, and shall overflow and pass over. He shall enter also into the glorious land, glorious land = Israel BIBLE QUOTE (Daniel 11:40) There is a huge amount at stake for Russia with regards the events in Syria. Syria was and still is an ally of Russia. It has armed Syria with tanks, planes and missiles. It now sees Syria in trouble and wants to do all it can to make other nations think twice about invading Syria or trying to topple the regime. On the other hand Russia is planning for the demise of the Syrian leadership and has stepped up criticism of Assad. On Tuesday, April 3, the Russian guided missile destroyer Smetliviy arrived in the Syrian port of Tartus from its Black Sea base for a naval exercise. The warships support group is also on the way. This is a sign that Russia will not idly sit by and watch other nations take the spoils from a devastated Syria. And so we see the Russian ships beginning to arrive. This was foretold in the Bible. So far we see just one ship. We know that when Gog comes down he will send many…

Russia/Iran set to counter US/Israeli strike against Iran Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov issued a strong warning against a military attack on Iran Monday, April 2, saying that a pre-emptive strike would violate international law. His comments, made during a visit to Armenia, stopped short of threatening (the US and/or Israel) of consequences. But they backed up and were in tune with the explicit threat from Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei last Thursday of strong Iranian resistance to foreign intervention in Syria and vow to defend Damascus as the centre of resistance against Israel. Western military observers link the two statements as representing an evolving Russian-Iranian front. After their shared success in delivering Bashar Assad from the revolt against his regime, the two partners are preparing to fend off a potential strike against Tehran’s nuclear program as well as shore up Iran’s regional interests from the Persian Gulf to the Mediterranean. DEBKAfile Special Report, April 2, 2012 EVENT COMMENT Be thou prepared, and prepare for thyself, thou, and all thy company that are assembled unto thee, and be thou a guard unto them. Thou = Gog / Russian leader All thy company = nations with Russia / eg Iran (Persia) Be prepared = get yourself ready Be thou a guard = protect them BIBLE QUOTE (Ezekiel 38:7) According to this report Russia and Iran are working as partners to protect Syria and also to protect Iran from a future strike. This is “an evolving Russian – Iranian front”. One headline this week in Eurasia Daily Monitor said “The Russian Military Has an Action Plan Involving Georgia if Iran Is Attacked.” Russia has troops in Armenia. But Georgia comes between Russia and Armenia. Moscow believes this border may be closed in the event of war. One Russian general said this week “Possibly, it will be necessary to use military means to breach the Georgian transport blockade and establish transport corridors, leading into Armenia.” And so Russia is putting plans in place to protect Iran and also to come down through Georgia into the Middle East…

Russian spies in the UK back to Cold War levels Russia has as many spies operating in Britain today as it did during the Cold War, security services believe. Up to half the staff at the Russian embassy in London could be involved in intelligence gathering, a senior source told The Daily Telegraph. Around 40 Moscow spies are believed to be operating in this country at any one time. Some are involved in traditional state espionage, while others monitor London-based oligarchs or engage in industrial spying for the commercial benefit of Russian firms. There are fears Russia will ramp up its efforts over the coming months while the UK security services focus on the Olympic Games and the Queen’s Jubilee celebrations. Britain's close relationship with America is also hugely attractive for Russia who sees it as a “back door” to US intelligence, one expert warned. Relations between the two nations have been strained in recent years. Daily Telegraph, April 6, 2012 EVENT COMMENT And at the time of the end shall the king of the south push at him: and the king of the north shall come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, and with horsemen, and with many ships; and he shall enter into the countries, and shall overflow and pass over. The Cold War in many ways is back. This week we have seen the above article about Russia spying back to Cold War levels in Britain. We have seen the following headline “Russia furious over U.S. Bout verdict”. This was about a Russian arms dealer who was convicted this week in America. Russia has said it will do everything to bring him home. Russia’s parliament this week said that the Russian government should begin planning economic sanctions against the United States. This is in retaliation for moves America is making over Russia’s human rights record. What we are reading about in these reports are the Biblical antagonists “king of the north” and “king of the south.” Russia is king of the north. America and Britain are “king of south.” They are provoking and pushing against each other. It will lead to war… BIBLE QUOTE (Daniel 11:40)

Violent protests erupt in Athens over debt suicide Violent protests broke out in Athens last night after an elderly man committed suicide near to the country's Parliament building, claiming he was distraught at the prospect of "looking in the garbage to feed myself". The pensioner, named locally as Dimitris Christoulas, shot himself with a handgun a few hundred yards from the Greek parliament, which has been the focus of numerous violent protests against tough austerity measures in recent months. Witnesses report he claimed to be concerned about leaving his children in debt before he took his own life. Within hours of the death mourners had created an impromptu memorial for the 77- year-old in the square, leaving notes and candles at the foot of a tree near to the spot where he shot himself. One of the notes read: "It was a murder, not a suicide". Italy has also reportedly seen suicides due to economic worries, with a 59-year-old shooting himself in Rome yesterday after claiming that his company was failing Daily Telegraph, April 5, 2012 EVENT COMMENT Do not wear yourself out to get rich; do not trust your own cleverness. Cast but a glance at riches, and they are gone, for they will surely sprout wings and fly off to the sky like an eagle.. People are killing themselves because of the financial worries they have. Before the financial crisis first began, Greece had the lowest suicide rate in Europe at 2.8 per 100,000 inhabitants, according to Eurostat. That has now almost doubled and is rising at an alarming rate. A Greek Ministry of Health study found the suicide rate in the first half of 2011 was 40 percent higher than the year before. If all we depend on and hope for and desire is money then it stands to reason if this is taken away we have nothing left but despair and this in some circumstances will lead to suicide. We know that total financial collapse is coming. Isaiah 24:2 says “See, the LORD is going to lay waste the earth it will be the same for seller as for buyer, for borrower as for lender, for debtor as for creditor". How wonderful to have a hope based on real foundations – unlike money. BIBLE QUOTE (Proverbs 23:4-5 NIV)

Passover Begins At Sundown Friday Passover, which celebrates what the Old Testament describes as God’s deliverance of the Israelites from bondage, begins at sundown Friday amid a call for Southland Jews to reflect on the plague of darkness that God visited upon the land of pharaoh. According to the book of Exodus, the enslaved Israelites used the blood of lambs to mark their doors so the Angel of Death would “pass over” their homes and instead slay the firstborn sons of Egyptians — the 10th and most horrific of the plagues that finally persuaded the pharaoh to agree to Moses’ demand: “Let my people go.” During the Seder [order], people drink four cups of wine, symbolizing the promises that God made to the Israelites, including deliverance from bondage. CBS, April 6, 2012 EVENT COMMENT And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, Take this, and divide it among yourselves: And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me. Likewise also the cup after supper [the 3 rd cup], saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you. We drink each Sunday from the 3 rd cup. The 4 th cup will finally be drunk in the kingdom. One might ask why we don’t keep the Passover like the Jews. Well of course we do. Only it is different. Jesus kept the Passover with his disciples shortly before his crucifixion. He instructed his disciples to keep certain parts of the Passover from then on in remembrance of him. The parts we were to keep were the breaking of bread and the drinking of wine. The eating of the lamb (the actual supper) was not part of the new order of service. Why? Because Christ has become the Passover lamb by the sacrifice of himself for our sins. Have you ever wondered why 2 cups of wine are mentioned in the gospel accounts? The answer is that in fact there were 4 cups but only 2 are mentioned. The 1st cup was symbolic of removing the burdens of Egypt. The 2nd was symbolic of removing their bondage. The 3rd cup (drunk after supper) was about God redeeming them. The 4 th was symbolic of God taking them to be a people. Every Sunday we take the “cup after supper” which was the 3rd cup.. symbolic of redemption.
