2 This lesson/resource looks at the teams that are taking part and asks you to research those countries. It also asks you to critically think about your findings, comparing them to UK statistics. The 2014 World Cup begins on the 12 th June. As football fever grips the world, it is important to connect with the African countries that are taking part.

5 Match the country to the flag Nigeria Meaning: The green stripes represent Nigeria's agriculture industry and its luscious vegetation. The white stripe represents the desire for peace and unity within the country.

6 Match the country to the flag Ghana Meaning: The red stripe represents the blood spilt during Ghana's fight for independence; the yellow stripe symbolises the mineral wealth of the country; and the green represents the fertility. The black five-pointed star symbolises African freedom and the African people.

7 Match the country to the flag Algeria Meaning: The white color represents peace; the green stands for the beauty of nature; red for the blood of those killed fighting for independence. The green on the Algerian flag is also a traditional symbol of Islam. The star and crescent also stand for Islam.

8 Match the country to the flag Cameroon Meaning: The green color in the flag symbolizes the rich forest vegetation of the country. The red represents independence and unity; while the yellow represents the savannas. The star symbolizes the unity of the country.

9 Match the country to the flag Ivory Coast Meaning: Orange is the color of the land, rich and generous, the meaning of our fight, the blood of young people fighting for emancipation; white represents peace, but peace with justice; and green stands for hope and the certainty of a better future.
