3 Lorem Ipsum Street, 45 Phone youngpeopleinrecovery.org What is policy? – Policy is a principle that allows people to successfully and effectively manage their affairs. – Policy comes in many forms (e.g.) legislative internal (policies/procedures) organizational

4 Lorem Ipsum Street, 45 Phone youngpeopleinrecovery.org What is advocacy? – Advocacy is the general promotion of an idea or cause; an idea or cause which is a principle(s) that allows people to successfully and effectively manage their affairs. – Advocacy builds public awareness of an issue or cause.

5 Lorem Ipsum Street, 45 Phone youngpeopleinrecovery.org Three components of effective advocacy 1.Organizing a team – reliable, qualified 2.Strong message – bold, clear, concise, consistent, accurate 3.Lobbying – subset of advocacy

6 Lorem Ipsum Street, 45 Phone youngpeopleinrecovery.org Advocacy vs. lobbying – Advocacy & lobbying are NOT the same! – Lobbying is a specific form of advocacy and includes: testifying at a public hearing for a bill urging public to vote for a bill communicating with legislator re: voting on bill posting a position on bill on social media

7 Lorem Ipsum Street, 45 Phone youngpeopleinrecovery.org YPR & Lobbying – For YPR to obtain/maintain 501(c)(3) tax- exempt status, lobbying activities are limited – Chapter Leads must always get authorization from YPR National before pursuing lobbying activities. – Never endorse political candidate!

8 Lorem Ipsum Street, 45 Phone youngpeopleinrecovery.org YPR’s position – YPR believes that education, employment, and secure, quality housing provides a strong foundation that allows young people to successfully and effectively manage and maintain their recovery. Therefore, we need to expand recovery support to include services that provide access to such.

9 Lorem Ipsum Street, 45 Phone youngpeopleinrecovery.org YPR’s advocacy strategy – YPR’s goal is to spread awareness of the critical nature of education, employment, and housing in ongoing recovery – YPR will advocate in three ways: 1.Educating the public 2.Providing workshops & programs 3.Lobbying (limited)

10 Lorem Ipsum Street, 45 Phone youngpeopleinrecovery.org Messaging – A strong message links YPR’s position to the intended audience (e.g. public, stakeholders) – Connect people’s self-interests to the interests of the YPR – Appeal to hearts & instincts, sense of right and wrong – Speak to concerns/circumstances of people’s lives
