2 Stepping Stones What is Mentoring? For our mentoring Scheme the following definition is the most appropriate: “Off-line help by one person to another in making significant transitions in knowledge, work or thinking” (Megginson and Clutterbuck 1995) The definition can be broken down as follows: Off-line - this is appropriate because the Mentor is not in a position of authority over the Mentee. (An on-line relationship would be, for example, between an individual and their manager). The beauty of the off-line mentoring relationship is that there is no conflict of role and both parties can be open.
