Figurative Language I SOP HAM Idiom Simile Onomatopoeia Personification Hyperbole Alliteration Metaphor
Idiom “Figure of speech”
Idiom Group of words that say one thing, but mean something completely different.
Examples of Idioms: “It was a piece of cake!” Meaning: It was easy to do
Examples of Idioms: “Keep your eyes peeled!” Meaning: Watch Carefully
Put your money where your mouth is. Meaning: Don’t just talk about something, buy it or invest in it.
You are dead meat! I’m angry with you. (threatening)

Simile Comparing two unlike things using the words “like” or “as”
Simile The 2 unlike things do have to have at least one thing in common though…
Examples of Simile: Jennifer eats like a pig. (Both Jennifer and a pig are messy eaters)
Examples of Simile: Jake was as happy as a kitten with a new ball of yarn. (both Jake and the kitten are happy)
