4. BUILDING A COMPREHENSIVE COLLECTION… COEs are responsible for building comprehensive collections But how do you know what a comprehensive collection is?

5. DEPOSITORY COLLECTIONS Often built over a long period of time Subject to wear and tear, theft, and previous collection policies COE documents may pre-date the library’s depository status Many documents collections are not cataloged

CENTER OF EXCELLENCE (COE) DATABASE Serves as a tool for analyzing the completeness of COE collection(s) and to identify gaps Also known as the Gap Analysis Tool “No historical federal government publications collection is 100% complete” Records for COE documents are uploaded to the database for comparison with other collections

10. A FEW MONTHS LATER… The University of Kentucky contacted us The COE Database/Gap Analysis Tool showed that we had 48 WPA documents that Kentucky did not Could Kentucky have them??
