1. Unequal Treaties- Benefited Europe at China’s Expense 2. Extra Territoriality- British citizens accused of crimes had the right to a trial in British court instead of Chinese Court. 3. Taiping Rebellion- A movement led by Hong Xiuguan’s followers. 4. Boxer Rebellion- When Boxers attacked missionaries and Chinese to convert them to Christianity. 5. All of china was being imperialized. They were not allowed to trade with European countries for a long time They were sheltered from the outside world.
The Qing Dynasty had control over China, but it slowly started losing power and influence when Britain wanted trade
China was now able to get goods and services that they didn’t have before, because they could now trade with the west. Their culture started to change a little, because they were now exposed to other thing. The British became happy because they made their trade equal; they used to five silver to China and receive tea, but now they’re giving opium and receiving tea.
The Chinese wanted silver, but there wasn’t any in the region, so they had to trade with the West They also went through a time when many wanted Opium, and they had to get that from the British citizens in China were allowed to be tried in British courts instead of Chinese. China soon after was forced to sign more treaties with Britain, France, the United States, and Russia.
The British were imperializing for economic and political reasons; they used treaties and unbalanced trade to influence the Chinese and slowly take over.
Some uprisings occurred as a result, like the Taiping Rebellion (followers of Hong Xiuquan who believed in the creation of “Heavenly Kingdom of Great Peace”), where Hong & followers captured large territories in SE China & by 1853 controlled the city of Nanjing. They were eventually defeated by the Qing.
