Cochin’s commercial, cultural & tourist importance, its highest emigration rate, growing metro status and a burning desire of the Non Resident Keralites for a direct international flight from their homeland and back prompted the development of an international airport at Cochin. Naval airport located near the city on Willington Island could not be developed to handle larger aircrafts due to various constraints such as It was a Defense airport & Restrictions for Night Operations Runway inadequate for operation of larger aircrafts and Geographic Limitations for Airport Expansion Unidirectional operation due to the presence of permanent obstacles

3 Formation of CIAL A Public Limited Company “Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) was Registered on 30th March with the following promoters Kochi International Airport Society Cochin Chamber of Commerce & Industry Ernakulam Chamber of Commerce Indian Chamber of Commerce & Industry Sri R Madhavan Nayar, Industrialist Sri C V Jacob, Industrialist Sri B Govinda Rao, Investor, Hospitality Sector

4 CIAL Capital Structure -1999
The Total Airport Project was proposed to complete in two phases and the revised estimated total cost of the project as on was Rs.289 Crores and the financing for the project is shown below Financial Institutions who Offered Term Loan to CIAL for Airport Construction Date Amount (Crs) HUDCO 98 Federal Bank 24.69 SBT 25 Equity Participation as on (Rs in Crores) TOTAL i.  Government of Kerala and Public Sector undertakings ii. M/s.Indian Oil Corporation ( )  ii. M/s.Thomas Cook ( )  iii M/s.Air India (1999 ) iv.  M/s.Alpha Retail – Duty Free Shop ( ) v.   Retail outlets ( ) TOTAL In return for the support extended by the Donors & Subscribers of the Interest Free Loan scheme of KIAS, CIAL issued to all donors, shares of CIAL for the amount donated to the company and also issued shares of CIAL for Rs.2500/- in the company for all subscribers of IFL Scheme without collecting any share application money 11000 investors from 30 countries

5 Additional Equity Infusions
First Right Issue at Face Value raising Equity Capital to Rs Crores Second Rights Issue at Face value raising Equity Capital to Rs.296 Crores On 16thSeptember 2004 the company had repaid entire loan with HUDCO along with interest, the repayment was not accepted by HUDCO demanding for 26% equity participation in the company at Face Value Final Settlement between Hudco and CIAL was reached by issuing 1 crore Equity shares at a face value Rs.10 Each on February 2012, which has enhanced the Equity share capital of the company to Rs.306 Crores

Initial Site Condition : 1994

8 Cochin International Airport Ltd – The Land Acquisition & Rehabilitation Process
An extent Hectares of land was acquired from about 3850 landowners which included 849 householders who were evicted and rehabilitated Land and houses were valued at market price and that value was given as compensation Six Cents of land (240 Sq M) were given free of cost to each family ,whose house were acquired as part of the rehabilitation package Evictees were allowed to dismantle and take all reusable building materials from their acquired houses and a sum of Rs was paid towards them for dismantling and related expenses Pre Paid Taxi service permits were provided to Land/House evictees as part of rehabilitation package. All Civic amenities like bituminous approach roads ,Street lighting, water supply, storm water drainage, Primary Health Centre were provided in the rehabilitation colony CIAL’s unique Rehabilitation Model is a Case Study of World Bank

Cochin International Airport Foundation Stone Laid on 21st August 1994 by Shri. K.Karunakaran, Chief Minister of Kerala Inauguration of Cochin International Airport by His Excellency President of India Shri. K.R.Narayanan on 25th May 1999 First Commercial Flight operation – Air India’s International flight from Dhahran to Cochin & back on 10th June 1999 Declaration of Cochin Airport as International Airport Shri. Sharad Yadav, Civil Aviation Minister (23rd May 2000) Foundation Stone laid for International Terminal Expansion on 10th February 2004 Expanded International Arrival Terminal Inaugurated on 20th August 2005 Parallel Taxi Track commissioned on 23rd December 2007 Centre for Perishable Cargo Complex commissioned on 2nd February 2009 Expanded International Departure Terminal Inauguration on 25th September 2009 CIAL Golf & Country Club Inauguration on 2nd May 2010 Inauguration of Trade fare Centre on 2012
