STUDYING GOD’S WORD PART II II Timothy 2:15 NKJV “Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”
STUDYING GOD’S WORD PART II II Timothy 3:16-17 NKJV 16. “All scripture is given by the inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 17. That the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.”
STUDYING GOD’S WORD PART II II Peter 1: 18-21 NKJV 18. “And so we heard this voice which came from the heaven when we were with Him on the holy mountain. 19. And so we have the prophetic word confirmed, which you do well to heed as a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.
STUDYING GOD’S WORD PART II II Peter 1: 18-21 NKJV 20. Knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation. 21. for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by th Holy Spirit.”
STUDYING GOD’S WORD PART II II Corinthians 4:4 “Whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ who is the image of God, should shine on them.” NKJV
STUDYING GOD’S WORD PART II II Corinthians 4:4 “The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.” NIV
STUDYING GOD’S WORD PART II War is being waged all around us. It is a spiritual war that we should be most concerned about. Good against evil; right against wrong; the warriors of God against Satan and those who support him, and that which is at stake are the souls of the lost.
STUDYING GOD’S WORD PART II There are so many hindrances in our way to the acceptance of God. Some of these we put in our own way and others are put in the way by the world and others are the work of the evil one. What are some of these hindrances?
STUDYING GOD’S WORD PART II Has God warned us about this? I Peter 3:17 “You therefore beloved, since you know this beforehand, beware lest you also fall from your own steadfastness, being led away with the error of the wicked.” NKJV
STUDYING GOD’S WORD PART II Acts 20:29-30 “For I know this, that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock, also form among yourselves men will rise up speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after themselves.” NKJV
STUDYING GOD’S WORD PART II Some hindrances we need to be aware of: Self Deception - We can deceive ourselves that Bible study is not important and that Bible study is the responsibility for preachers and elders, and is not our own responsibility. We can claim that we do not have the time for Bible study and thus rob ourselves of one of life’s greatest blessings.
STUDYING GOD’S WORD PART II I Cor. 3: 18-20 “ Let no one deceive himself, if anyone among you seems to be wise in this age, let him become a fool that he may become wise. 19. For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He catches the wise in their own craftiness. 20. And again, the Lord knows the thoughts of the wise that they are futile.”
STUDYING GOD’S WORD PART II Allowing ourselves to be deceived by others. People can deceive us. Do your own study of God’s Word. Let’s see what the Bible says should be our answer when asked a Biblical question. Be Bereans, and search the scriptures to make sure what the Bible says. It is just as easy to believe a lie as the truth.
STUDYING GOD’S WORD PART II Eph 5:6 “Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience.” NKJV
STUDYING GOD’S WORD PART II -Thinking we do not have time is a hindrance to Bible study and understanding. -According to google the average life span for a male is 71 years, for a female it is 73 years. For a male, we have almost 26,000 days on average of life here on this earth. We are to be wise in how we use the time God gives us.
STUDYING GOD’S WORD PART II Is TV, sports, or any hobby we might have more important that studying God’s Word? Is it really more important? Eph 5:16 “Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.” NKJV The NIV says, “making the most of time because the days are evil.” We can’t do anything about the past and we have no promise of tomorrow. Today we should begin a serious Bible study.
STUDYING GOD’S WORD PART II Allowing the love of the world to crowd out Bible study and understanding.
STUDYING GOD’S WORD PART II -I John 2: 15-17 “Do not love the world or the things in the world, if anyone loves the world the love of the Father is not in him. 16. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father but is of the world. 17. And the world is passing away and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.”
STUDYING GOD’S WORD PART II We can become so engaged in worldly pursuits that we forget God and we forget the great task before us of serving God faithfully.
STUDYING GOD’S WORD PART II Think about your life and what will endure through the ages. Think about what will soon be nothing and be forgotten. Engaging in the spiritual will build for eternity. Study the Bible and seek understanding.
STUDYING GOD’S WORD PART II Other hindrances include but are not limited to: Troubles and worries of this life. Love of power and money. What others think of you.
STUDYING GOD’S WORD PART II Some attitudes necessary to understanding the Bible. We should love the Word of God. Psalms 118:97 “Oh, how I love Your law! I meditate on it all day long.”
STUDYING GOD’S WORD PART II Do you have a fervent love for God and for His will for you life? Love must be something you cultivate. You cultivate a love of God’s Word by seeing how wonderful His truths are and how they bless the world.
STUDYING GOD’S WORD PART II We should develop a humble spirit as we approach Bible study. We cannot be a know it all. James 4:10 “Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.”
STUDYING GOD’S WORD PART II We should develop a disciplined mind as we study the Bible. Reading God’s Word is not necessarily studying it.
STUDYING GOD’S WORD PART II We must be dedicated to the study; pushing out the worries and cares of the world Success will not come quickly, but with discipline you can train yourself to be successful.
STUDYING GOD’S WORD PART II All good things in life come to those who will work and strive to succeed.
STUDYING GOD’S WORD PART II We must have and open mind as we study the Bible. We can study to reinforce our own preconceived beliefs and force the Bible to say what we want it to say or we can open our hearts and be ready and willing to change our beliefs and life style to conform to the Word of God.
STUDYING GOD’S WORD PART II James 1:21 “Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word which is able to save y our souls.” Repentance is that great word of the Bible that demands radical change in our life. Are we willing to approach the Bible with an open mind?
STUDYING GOD’S WORD PART II We must have an honest mind in our study of the Bible. Let the Bible speak. Stay on course wherever it leads. It may lead us to condemnation to what we have believed all our lives. It may lead us to support of what beliefs we have held and in such cases give us encouragement to press ahead.
STUDYING GOD’S WORD PART II I Peter 4:11 “If anyone speaks, let him speak as the oracles of God. If anyone ministers, let him do it as with the ability which God supplies, that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, in whom belong the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen.” NKJV
STUDYING GOD’S WORD PART II We should approach the study of the Bible with a hunger and thirst. Matt. 5:6 “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled.” NKJV
STUDYING GOD’S WORD PART II There is an excitement and a thrill at approaching the Bible and that “I just can’t wait attitude of grasping a truth I never knew.”
STUDYING GOD’S WORD PART II We should approach our study of the Bible with a positive attitude. Is God a pessimist or an optimist? He wants us to be optimistic in every way.
STUDYING GOD’S WORD PART II Philippians 4:13 “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Hebrews 11 is the great chapter about faithful men and women. They were all optimistic. Bible study should also be done with a like spirit.
STUDYING GOD’S WORD PART II We should study the Bible with the spirit of thankfulness. Thankfulness for our teachers, those spiritual men and women who influence us in our spiritual journey.
STUDYING GOD’S WORD PART II Thankful for a God who has given me the Book that will lead me to Him through obedience to it’s precepts. Thankful for the Book that says when I fail, God will forgive me through Jesus Christ His son.
STUDYING GOD’S WORD PART II I Thess. 5:16-22 “Read”
STUDYING GOD’S WORD PART II We should approach our study of the Bible with an obedient mind. We must read and understand the Bible and then obey what it has for us to obey. The Bible is not JUST a history book. It is truly the LIVING AND ACTIVE WORD OF GOD.
STUDYING GOD’S WORD PART II The Bible has changed lives and nations and it has in many ways changed the course of history. It can, and will change your life if you will read it and obey it.
