LA CÉRÉMONIE Professor Emeritus, Dr. John J. Janc, PhD North Central Vice President of Pi Delta Phi Installing Officer
CEREMONY (TRANSLATION) New Members, It is a great pleasure for me to welcome you. Our Honor Society knows the success you have received during your studies and the love you have for the French culture, and I happily admit you to the title of initiated. Before accepting this honor, you have to experience the duty. They are: you must do your best to spread the profound knowledge and living French and French world cultures, maintain fraternal sentiments for the other members of the society, and respect your constitution. If you accept these duties, respond, “I accept them” Now, Mr./Mrs./Miss ____________ will discuss the objections, the organization, and the history of Pi Delta Phi.
CEREMONY (TRANSLATION) New members of PI DELTA PHI, we have tried to impress upon you of the intellectual values found in the French culture. This chapter, into which you all have been inducted, bears the emblem of the Gallic rooster and three fleur de lys supporting the Greek letters: Pi, Delta, Phi. The rooster and the fleur de lys are traditional symbols of France. The Gallic rooster on our banner proclaims our motto, PI DELTA PHI. These letters are for us symbolic of the tasks that fall on us as members of this Society: to spread the knowledge of the French language and francophone cultures. These three letters are the initials of the three Greek words: Probaînomen Dâkritoi Philogälatoi. This Greek phrase means: “Let us move ahead, faithful friends of French culture.” These three candles represent the three colors of the flag of the French Republic: they also symbolize the three important human concepts that were born in the heart of France, and that have so much influence within our own lives: Liberty, Equality, Brotherhood.
CEREMONY (TRANSLATION) We will now blow out the blue and the red to leave the white shining alone, a light symbolizing the wisdom and the truth that France gives to the entire world. Focus for a moment on the flame... New members and old, please stand. And now, like so many others before you, repeat the following oath: “I promise to do everything in my power to spread the French culture and that of the Francophone world.” In virtue of the power that we have bestowed upon us by the Constitution (Here the new members are named in alphabetical order), we declare you all regular members of PI DELTA PHI and worthy of enjoying the rights and privileges of our order. (Naming honorary members) Will you please approach the table. (Names are repeated)... by the same powers, and in recognition of the number of services you have provided to the students of your community and to the francophone cause, we declare you to be honorary members of PI DELTA PHI and worthy of enjoying all the rights and privileges of our order. Now the new members receive their pins of the Society. Then they sign the registry of the chapter. With these formalities the initiation ceremony concludes.
CLOSING “Quand tu veux construire un bateau, ne commence pas par rassembler du bois, couper des planches et distribuer du travail, mais réveille au sein des hommes le désir de la mer grande et large.” “If you want to build a ship, don’t drum up the men to gather wood, divide the work, and give orders. Instead, teach them to yearn for the vast and endless sea.” ― Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
