A Pop Quiz! Are YOU Qualified To Continue in This Session? 1. एक क्रिया क्या है ?

-What are we intending to measure? -Of THAT language? … YES! -Of the content? …NO!

DECODING THE CONTENT & INTERACTING WITH OR RESPONDING TO THE CONTENT Are Different Skill Sets!

ALL STUDENTS CAN ACQUIRE SKILLS THAT MOVE THEM TOWARD INDEPENDENCE. IF THEY ARE NOT, IT IS BECAUSE I HAVEN’T BEEN CREATIVE, SKILLFUL, OR DETERMINED ENOUGH WITH THEIR INSTRUCTION. STUDENTS INDEPENDENCE I CREATIVESKILLFUL DETERMINED INSTRUCTION

ESSENTIAL CONSIDERATIONS Are you willing, permitted and able to TEACH DIFFERENTLY, not just teach with different tools?

SETTSETT tudent or Self nvironments asks ools

SETT … guidance and organization that helps ensure purposeful, systematic, collaborative and SUCCESSFUL implementation of tools with students.

SETTSETT tudent or Self nvironments asks ools These 3 are CLOSELY linked, and not necessarily in this order. THIS one is ALWAYS last!

SETT Not New! …BUT, we have a fairly new problem that screams for it’s application.

HOW DO YOU KNOW… If a learning environment is Universally Designed? If materials are accessible? If/When AT is required to implement AIM? If your students even have a need for AIM or AT? How & When to make the AIM & AT decisions necessary? Where to find accessible materials and AT ? How to create accessible materials?

“Accessible instructional materials (AIM) are specialized formats of curricular content that can be used by and with learners who are unable to read or use standard print materials. They include formats such as braille, audio, large print, and digital text.” From the National Center on Accessible Instructional Materials

ADA Title II Rehab. Act. Section 504/508 IDEA 2004: FAPE, LRE, NIMAS

Accessible Instructional materials must be provided for students that can't access text in the standard way National Instructional Materials Accessibility Standard (NIMAS) Initiative The NIMAC coordinates with State & Local Educational Agencies to ensure that accessible materials are available The PATINS Project/ICAM (Indiana Center for Accessible Materials) is Indiana's authorized agency to coordinate with National Instructional Materials Access Center Keep In Mind: Students MUST have access to their general education programming regardless of NIMAS!

“BUT STILL… IT’S NOT FAIR TO THE KIDS WHO HAVE READ IT THEMSELVES!” -THE TEACHER DOWN THE HALL

3 FACTS ABOUT AIM 1.All AIM in Indiana is accessible through one place. 2.NIMAS is a federal mandate 3.Offering specialized formats of materials is a modification we fairly easily can offer students 4.PATINS Staff offers follow-up implementation training once you’ve received specialized formats

Universal Design is a concept or philosophy for designing and delivering products and services that are usable by people with the widest possible range of functional capabilities, which includes products and services that are directly usable (w/out requiring assistive technologies) and products/services that are made useable with assistive technologies.

Providing Multiple and Flexible Means of: PRESENTING Info to Students Allowing Students to RESPOND ENGAGING Students

Is a framework full of Choice & Flexibility vs. a scripted curriculum. Physical Access Materials, Methods, Tools, Assessment Cognitive Access Materials, Methods, Tools, Assessment

Recruit Interest (extrinsic) Information that does not engage learner’s cognition, is in fact, inaccessible. Sustain Effort (extrinsic) Video game motivation factor. Attention & Affect Regulation to Maintain. Levels? Points? Self-Determined Breaks of physical, visual, auditory nature? Self Regulation (intrinsic) Difference more likely than uniformity. Affect and Motivation might need explicit instruction. of UDL

The Tools needed to participate and learn And sometimes to Implement AIM. The Principles that Address “problems” With the curriculum. CAN require AT The Materials that Help all students access to the content. CAN require AT for Implementation.

MODIFICATIONS VS. ACCOMMODATIONS A Modification is when general education curriculum or learning expectation is altered Accommodations do not modify the content, but allows for some changes to presentation, timing, response, setting, and equipment.

UDL DEFINED IN ARTICLE 7 Sec "Universal design" means a concept or philosophy for designing and delivering products and services that are usable by people with the widest possible range of functional capabilities, which include products and services that are: (1) directly accessible, without requiring assistive technologies; and (2) interoperable with assistive technologies.

UDL & ASSESSMENT IN ARTICLE IAC State and local assessments State and local assessments must, to the greatest extent possible, be administered using Universal Design Principles.

SOME UDL STRATEGIES/METHODS All Choices in location and seating Varied writing utensils and paper Handwriting alternatives (typed, speech to text) Project options/choices Advanced background information Post lesson enhancement Information presented auditorily, visually, kinesthetically, and available outside of classroom

SOME UDL TOOLS All Keyboard text to speech Drawing tools iPad (presentation & response) Wikipedia Tools Highlighters (digital and conventional) Most Organizational apps Word Prediction software Sound Field Systems Some AAC Devices iAuthor Virtual Reality Augmented Reality iMovie / Moviemaker (apps or computer based) 41

UDL MATERIALS AIM Specialized Formats Braille Large Print Digital Text Audio Captions Video Tactile Graphics Audio Descriptions

Some Initial Questions: Why is this on paper? Is the content relevant? Is it accessible? Why?/Why Not?

UDL and accommodations in the testing is important. The real value for improved student achievement lies in UDL tools and strategies implemented throughout the year.

MORE CONSIDERATIONS…EXCUSES “It’s not FAIR !” “All students don’t have one.” It’s a tool, not a reward. All kids don’t have eye glasses or wheelchairs either. “They’re too young for computers.” Why? Let’s Talk. After 2 nd Grade may be too late to catch up in reading “I’m not enough of an expert yet.” Empower your students by learning with them. “It’s just not enough like a real computer.” Exactly. It’s more portable and socially valid. What’s the reason it needs to be a true computer? “They’re too expensive.” They are a real cost, true. So, let’s not add this to what we’re already doing, let’s replace something.

SOURCE: IC ; (11)HE > SECTION 2. IC , AS ADDED BY P.L , SECTION 2, IS AMENDED TO READ AS FOLLOWS [EFFECTIVE JULY 1, 2011]: Sec. 23 "Textbook" means systematically organized material designed to provide a specific level of instruction in a subject matter category, including: (1) books; (2) hardware that will be consumed, accessed, or used by a single student during a semester or school year; (3) computer software; and (4) digital content.

“ OK, but our textbook is online ”
