A CTS 8: Now an angel of the Lord spoke to Philip, saying, “Arise and go toward the south along the road which goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.” This is desert. 27 So he arose and went. And behold, a man of Ethiopia, a eunuch of great authority under Candace the queen of the Ethiopians, who had charge of all her treasury, and had come to Jerusalem to worship, 28 was returning. And sitting in his chariot, he was reading Isaiah the prophet. 29 Then the Spirit said to Philip, “Go near and overtake this chariot.” 30 So Philip ran to him, and heard him reading the prophet Isaiah, and said, “Do you understand what you are reading?” 31 And he said, “How can I, unless someone guides me?” And he asked Philip to come up and sit with him. 32 The place in the Scripture which he read was this: “He was led as a sheep to the slaughter; And as a lamb before its shearer is silent, So He opened not His mouth. 33 In His humiliation His justice was taken away, And who will declare His generation? For His life is taken from the earth.”

A CTS 8: So the eunuch answered Philip and said, “I ask you, of whom does the prophet say this, of himself or of some other man?” 35 Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning at this Scripture, preached Jesus to him. 36 Now as they went down the road, they came to some water. And the eunuch said, “See, here is water. What hinders me from being baptized?” 37 Then Philip said, “If you believe with all your heart, you may.” And he answered and said, “I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.” 38 So he commanded the chariot to stand still. And both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water, and he baptized him. 39 Now when they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught Philip away, so that the eunuch saw him no more; and he went on his way rejoicing. 40 But Philip was found at Azotus. And passing through, he preached in all the cities till he came to Caesarea.

H E P REACHED J ESUS TO H IM What can we learn from the account of Philip teaching the Ethiopian Eunuch?

F ROM I SAIAH 53 TO W ATER B APTISM  Isaiah 53 – A quick glimpse into this passage  What does this passage tell us about Jesus?  Many would doubt His revelation  He was not known or followed for His appearance  He was despised and rejected—a Man of sorrow and grief  He was wounded for our transgressions  He paid the price for our peace and healing  He was bruised and afflicted for our sins, not His own  He died for our sins  His soul was made an offering for sin and it pleased God  He justified many, bearing our sins and making intercession

F ROM I SAIAH 53 TO W ATER B APTISM  They discussed water baptism…  This was obviously a featured part of Philip’s message – cf. Acts 8:12-13  Was this a topic of importance? – cf. Eph. 4:5; Rom. 6:1-6; Col. 2:11-14; Gal. 3:26-27  What do you think Philip said to the eunuch about baptism?  Matt. 3: Perhaps they spoke of John’s baptism and Jesus being baptized by John?  Luke 7:29-30 – Perhaps they spoke of those who submitted to John’s baptism and those who would not?  John 4:1-2 – Perhaps they spoke of Jesus’ disciples baptizing?  Mark 16:15-16 – Perhaps they spoke of Jesus’ promise of salvation?  Matt. 28:19-20 – Perhaps they spoke of discipleship?  Acts 2:38-41 – Perhaps they spoke of the Day of Pentecost?

T HE I MPLICATIONS OF THIS A CCOUNT  God will open doors of opportunity for us to hear and understand the gospel  Are you aware of and looking for such opportunities?  Do you realize that God desires your salvation? – cf. 1 Tim. 2:3-4; 2 Pet. 3:9

T HE I MPLICATIONS OF THIS A CCOUNT  It didn’t take the eunuch long to reach a point of belief with all of his heart!  This man clearly seems to have had some type of Jewish background. Therefore, he might have had some knowledge of Jesus.  It did not take him days, weeks, months or years to respond! Once an offer of salvation was realized, he responded. – cf. Acts 16:30-33 (Heb. 3:15; 2 Cor. 6:2)  His belief in Christ spurred immediate obedience to His will – cf. Rom. 6:17

T HE I MPLICATIONS OF THIS A CCOUNT  You are ready to be baptized if you believe with all your heart that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and you are willing to surrender your life and to confess Him as your Lord! – cf. Rom. 10:6-13  Do you realize that Jesus gave His life for your sins? – cf. Mark 10:45; Rom. 5:6-11  Do you realize that Jesus rose from the dead so that you can walk in newness of life? – cf. Rom. 6:4; 2 Cor. 5:17  Do you realize that Jesus ascended to His Father’s right hand to show you the way and make a place for you? – cf. John 14:1-6

1 P ETER 2: For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps: 22 “Who committed no sin, Nor was deceit found in His mouth”; 23 who, when He was reviled, did not revile in return; when He suffered, He did not threaten, but committed Himself to Him who judges righteously; 24 who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness— by whose stripes you were healed. 25 For you were like sheep going astray, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.
