Helsinki University of Technology Systems Analysis Laboratory 5 Graduates’ placement in the job market  Research in industry (incl. consulting, risk mgmt) 39 %  Research in public sector 24 %  Universities 24 %  Public administration 9 %  Other jobs in the private sector 5 %

Helsinki University of Technology Systems Analysis Laboratory 6 Examples of research fields covered  Multi-criteria decision analysis and optimization  Optimization and game theory  Modeling of dynamic systems  Energy, environmental and biological modeling  Data envelopment analysis  Safety and risk analysis  Finance and stochastic optimization

Helsinki University of Technology Systems Analysis Laboratory 7 Typical activities  Research done in research groups  Intensive courses given by foreign experts, e.g. opponents of dissertations –2-4 courses per year –Short-term visits – longer visits in the future? –Open to everybody interested in the subject »Popular among researchers from SYKE, VTT and other organizations –Attendance students  Graduate school students have a possibility to take any courses in TKK or HSE

Helsinki University of Technology Systems Analysis Laboratory 8 Annual graduate school seminars  2-3 days out of town –Boat trips etc.  In collaboration with foreign universities –St. Petersburgh, Stockholm, Tallinn  Focus on one specific topic at a time –Writing, citations, journals  Students’ presentations of their research

Helsinki University of Technology Systems Analysis Laboratory 9 Full-time students’ funding ( ) Ministry of Education 5 graduate school positions23 % Academy of Finland Research projects7 % TKK, HSE 4 assistantships and complementary funding for graduate school positions 30 % Other project funding FaF, MATINE, VTT, Pöyry, Nokia, Kone, Finnish road administration, ministry of agriculture and forestry, SA, Tekes, % Scholarships12 %

Helsinki University of Technology Systems Analysis Laboratory 10 Communication to students and supervisors  list –Upcoming events  Website –Contact information –Intensive courses and seminars –Events organized by other organizations –Other graduate schools, summer schools –Archive of past activities

Helsinki University of Technology Systems Analysis Laboratory 11 Organization  Strong research groups are the basis of the graduate school Director and 4 other supervising professors Involved research groups TKK 1TKK 4TKK 3TKK 2HSE 5HSE 6HSE 7 Graduate students Steering committee

Helsinki University of Technology Systems Analysis Laboratory 12 National graduate school from 2010  The goal is to cover all the major OR groups in Finland  3 new research groups will join the school –Christer Carlsson, Åbo Akedemi –Marko Mäkelä (and Risto Lahdelma, TKK), University of Turku –Kaisa Miettinen, Jyväskylä University  12 supervising professors, about 30 full-time graduate students  7 graduate school positions for the period –Call for applications in October 2009

Helsinki University of Technology Systems Analysis Laboratory 13 Organization from 2010  Extended steering group coordinates the school –Management group directs the school –Advisory group works as a link between the school and collaboration organizations –Other supervising professors Extended steering group: Mgmt group, advisory group, supervising professors TKKÅAJyUHSEUTU Collaboration: -Research projects’ customers - Other graduate schools -Research collaboration with research institutes -Foreign universities Research groups Graduate students Aal?to

Helsinki University of Technology Systems Analysis Laboratory 14 Efforts to increase students’ internationalization  Funding to participate in international summer schools –Only 1-4 students per year have taken advantage of this possibility  Students give presentations about their research in international conferences once a year (funded by research groups)  Researcher visits –Supervisors’ contacts yield good possibilities in top universities abroad –½-1 year long visits – little interest –1-4 weeks short visits – some interest –Important, but how to encourage?

Helsinki University of Technology Systems Analysis Laboratory 15 Recruitment  Most full-time students have already been working as research assistants in some of the school’s research groups –Supervisors have first hand knowledge about the candidates’ capabilities  Promising master-level students are involved early in the graduate school’s activities already before graduation –Intensive courses –Seminars –Conferences  Foreign students possible

Helsinki University of Technology Systems Analysis Laboratory 16 Practises proven good  Seminars with a specific topic –Seminar on Scientific writing held in 2006 was found very useful by the students –Require professors’ contribution in preparation –Reproducible  Intensive courses –A glance at a more specific area of research in a short time –Require only little contribution from the universities’ staff –Networking possibilities for the students  Conference presentation rehearsals –Held for laboratory staff about 2-3 weeks before the conference –Critical comments and discussion
