5 OPP K.I.D.S 2013 Main Purpose Connect with our kids in our policing area Reduce self-victimization Prevent Crime

6 OPP K.I.D.S 2013 Details of Program 9-10 weeks in length (50 min. to 1 hour class time) 27 elementary schools actively involved in the teaching programs offered by the OPP Many DVD’S in conjunction with the lessons Opportunity for culminating activities for students if time and willingness permits Interactive games for variety (like TV jeopardy) Certificate upon graduation, OPP “swag” for keepsake

7 OPP K.I.D.S 2013 Curriculum Covered Youth and the Law Peer to Peer Relations Online and Social Media Awareness Drug and Alcohol Awareness Mental Health Awareness

8 OPP K.I.D.S 2013 Youth and The Law Identify what the purpose of laws are in Ontario and Canada Discuss Youth Criminal Justice Act and identify the laws commonly associated with youth Review the court process Examine possible consequences for breaking laws Discover what it means to have a criminal record

9 OPP K.I.D.S 2013 Peer to Peer Relationships Learn to distinguish between flirting and harassment Define personal boundaries for what is considered acceptable and unacceptable behavior Learn how to help a classmate who is being harassed in any way (the impact of bullying) Make good choices about friends and relationships Appreciate the value of self-respect and respect for others

10 OPP K.I.D.S 2013 Online and Social Media Awareness Learn some coping and response strategies if they become victims of online communication bullying and learn to self-identify and correct situations where they may be bullying others Understand there is NO privacy on the internet Identify the dangers and benefits of social networking Learn to make informed decisions about online communication choices Understand risks associated with online behaviour

11 OPP K.I.D.S 2013 Drug and Alcohol Awareness Realize there is no such thing as a “safe” recreational drug Develop an understanding of the dangers of prescription drug abuse and energy drinks Understand that the choices they make today may have significant consequences in their future Learn skills for avoiding peer influence to experiment with drugs or engage in risky behavior

12 OPP K.I.D.S 2013 Mental Health Awareness Develop an understanding of the impact and seriousness of mental health issues for themselves and members of their community Examine the definition of mental health and learn to identify both symptoms and warning signs Identify a variety of ways to maintain overall mental wellbeing Explore options for seeking help for themselves and others

14 Upon completion of the OPP K.I.D.S Program in the fall there will be an evaluation period conducted. PC Krpan will consult the involved teachers for feedback. If the program proves successful, PC Krpan will schedule the remainder of public and catholic schools with the OPP K.I.D.S Program for winter sessions and spring sessions.
