Proppants During the Hydraulic Fracturing process, a granular material called Proppant is transported within the fluid to fill the fracture, therefore “propping” it open once the high-pressure pumping stops. The fractures, now filled by Proppant, create a permeable channel through which the hydrocarbons can flow more freely, thereby increasing both production rates and the amount of oil or gas actually recovered from the well.
