Agenda Overview – Microsoft perspective of Asset Management moving forward Tools available to assist Asset Management – System Center Config Manager – Asset Intelligence Software Asset Management – A LAR Perspective 2

The Asset Management Problem The CIO Perspective Must be able to verify asset existence -How do we know that assets are still in use? -Which assets have been disposed of or lost/stolen? Asset records need to be complete -How do we make sure that all purchased IT assets are included in the financial statements? Need to understand rights and obligations -Which IT assets are owned or leased or rented? -Are we in compliance with license agreements?

System Center Scenarios 4

Asset & License Management: Priorities Mission: To provide tools that allow customers to more easily inventory and manage assets across their enterprise Deliver a comprehensive solution for tracking / managing enterprise assets -Software – identification, categorization -Hardware – primary user, machine / CPU age, peripherals -Reporting - lifecycle, compliance, etc. Deliver a comprehensive solution for tracking / managing license units -Bits-based -Connection-based -Other (proc, virtual, subscription, etc.) Define and drive broader asset management scenarios - Reporting -> Management thru Service Desk “Embrace and normalize” future asset & licensing models -Drive internal modeling (SML) efforts for asset / license metadata -Participate in relevant industry standards efforts (e.g. ISO 19770) 5 Microsoft Confidential: Internal Use Only

The Asset Management Problem What assets do we have and where are they? – How do we know this is a complete list ? How do we prove that assets still exist ? – How many assets are on order, in the store room, out for repair? – What was the original cost, how much are they worth now? When should we consider replacing them? Who owns them? Who is responsible for them? – When did we buy them? Are they still supported? When does the warranty run out? – We leased these right? When does the lease run out? Where did my software come from? Is it licensed? – I see Acme software on my system, but did it get installed from my vendor copy, or from a copy someone bought at my local computer store? – OK – I figured out what Acme is, and how it’s installed – but how much does my vendor think I own? 6

7 The System Center Solution Plan, Procure, Assign Packaging & Deployment Inventory & Analysis Change Management System Center Configuration Manager System Center Online Software Packaging and Deployment Asset Inventory & Reporting License Mgmt (MSFT only) Patch Mgmt System Center Service Manager Integration with LOB systems Workflows to support change management -Procure new -Reallocate -Retire

8 Microsoft System Center Asset Management Roadmap Theme: Improve Asset Visibility Acquired AssetMetrix Corp. to provide additional “Asset Intelligence” technologies for System Centre Deliver enhanced asset identification and categorization capabilities into SMS 2003 SP3 and SCCM New Asset Information Service to be launched Integrated MSFT license usage reporting & reconciliation Theme: Improve Asset Visibility Acquired AssetMetrix Corp. to provide additional “Asset Intelligence” technologies for System Centre Deliver enhanced asset identification and categorization capabilities into SMS 2003 SP3 and SCCM New Asset Information Service to be launched Integrated MSFT license usage reporting & reconciliation Theme: Automating Asset Management Easily integrate with procurement systems via System Center Service Manager Workflow solutions to automate tasks across the entire asset management lifecycle Provide ability to track and manage disparate license types (e.g. CALs). Phase 1 Phase Phase Theme: Model- driven Asset Management Provide tools that make it easy for all software developers to describe their products in a consistent way, and easily integrate with Windows licensing technologies. Deliver new capabilities into System Center Wave 3 that: -Make it easy to manage license stores & data across the enterprise; -Deliver comprehensive asset reporting (e.g. lifecycle summary, policy compliance scorecard, etc.)

+ + New Asset and License Reports SW Consolidation Upgrade Planning License Reporting SMS H/W & S/W Inventory Data AssetMetrix Knowledge Base “Asset Intelligence” Adding AssetMetrix Capabilities to SCCM 2007 : Goal: Augment existing SMS inventory capabilities with comprehensive asset identification & categorization. Facilitate decision support for upgrade / migration planning, software consolidate, license reconciliation, and more. : Approach: -Based on AssetMetrix (AMx) acquisition in April Integrate AMx Knowledge Base tables into SMS - ~350,000 categorized apps -Extend SMS inventory agent (thru WMI) to collect additional artifact data -Deliver several (> 35) new SMS reports that facilitate asset & license mgmt. 9

Recent Usage Inventory: SCCM metering agent will inventory the last time any executable was running in the user context. Data returned through hardware inventory. Additional reports will help you answer the “When was the last time this was used?” question. Auto-created Metering Rules: Last Usage Inventory can be used to auto-create full metering rules which you can decide to enable. Simplifies the process of creating metering rules. Asset Change Summarization: A summary of changes to computer assets is stored in a central table. Managing deltas help reduce the complexity of asset management. Additional reports help you answer the “What has changed recently in my environment?” question. Client Access Licenses usage tracking for Microsoft Windows and Exchange: Both User and Device CALs usage is tracked. Based on Security audit logs. Additional reports answer the “who used up the CALs”, “when did they do that” questions. Asset Intelligence

What assets do we have now? -Actual Configuration – “Discovered” assets What assets should we have? -Desired Configuration - the “Book of Record” Service Manager allows you to track -Which licenses you have acquired -How you have allocated those licenses -How you have used those licenses (via SCCM integration) Management tools may be able identify… -Who actually requires a license (based on software metering) Are we in compliance with License agreements ? 15 Summary Asset Management represents a strategic investment for Microsoft: – SCCM 2007 provides much greater visibility into deployed assets – System Center Service Manager helps to track and manage IT assets across all lifecycle phases – Participation in industry standards initiatives (e.g. ISO x) 15

Software Asset Management A LAR Perspective………

Proactively look at licensing and SAM as an ongoing discipline rather than an audit-driven activity Establish responsibility and funding for SAM projects – gain executive sponsorship Develop Policies and procedures to manage an audit before the audit occurs Understand the Licensing agreement and/or contract. Protect your organisation – confidentially and responsibility agreements Organisations require a mix of tools, resource and expertise Taking control of SAM
