INCOSE GLRC, 10 October 2014 TURNING BOILERMAKERS INTO SILO BUSTERS THE SYSTEMS INITIATIVE AT PURDUE C. Robert Kenley, PhD, ESEP Associate Professor of Engineering Practice School of Industrial Engineering, Purdue University Web:

INCOSE GLRC, 10 October 2014 THE BEGINNING OF A TRADITION 3 THE BOILERMAKER The year was A college known for its proud heritage of educating the sons and daughters of the working class began to dominate opponents in football. After a 44-0 thrashing of Wabash College, a headline writer provided inspiration for a most unique nickname. “Wabash Snowed Completely Under by the Burly Boiler Makers from Purdue” chronicled a victory by the “Herculean wearers of the black and old gold.” Never intended as a compliment, the insult appealed to students of the day. The indomitable spirit of the boilermaker is embodied in the tireless laborer you see before you.

INCOSE GLRC, 10 October 2014 WHY CAN’T WE SOLVE THESE PROBLEMS? 10

INCOSE GLRC, 10 October 2014 WHY PURDUE FOR THESE PROBLEMS? 11 Purdue’s Mission: “is to serve the citizens of Indiana, the United States, and the world…”. Engineering, Sciences, and Liberal Arts are about understanding and solving society’s problems, as well as making dreams a reality – serving society Purdue’ strengths in Engineering, Sciences, Business, and Social Sciences provides a unique collaborative opportunity - with an ‘application culture”

INCOSE GLRC, 10 October 2014 RESEARCH POTENTIAL Bringing in the Human Dimension Discovering Universal Principles Designing around Equilibria 12

INCOSE GLRC, 10 October 2014 Interactions Multiple stakeholders and actors interacting explicitly and implicitly Unpredictable emergent behavior Information Uncertain and rapidly changing environments Overwhelming amounts of data Incentives Nonmonetary social and political incentives and constraints Multiple stakeholders with power and resources PURDUE’S RESEARCH FOCUS UNDERSTANDING INTERACTIONS, INFORMATION, AND INCENTIVES FOR DESIGNING SYSTEMS 13

INCOSE GLRC, 10 October 2014 HOW DOES RESEARCH SUPPORT DESIGN? Design Consideration State of the Art and PracticeResearch Focus PerformanceMeasured from perspective of a single decision maker’s objectives Methods to accommodate multiple stakeholders’ value systems during design and operations CostFinancial accounting of costs to meet budgets constraints and investors’ financial goals Means to account for nonmonetary resources consumed, ethical constraints, and stakeholders’ goals ScheduleMeeting a date certain to deliver results Planning for multiple, flexible delivery approaches and evolutionary designs RiskControlling and eliminating uncertainty Planning for adaptive decisions in response to an uncertain and changing environment 14

INCOSE GLRC, 10 October 2014 TRANSFORMATIVE IMPACT SCIENCE TO EXPLAIN, METHODS FOR PRACTICE, AND EDUCATION AT MULTIPLE LEVELS Educational Enterprise Researchers Policy makers and engineers Public Research Enterprise Theoretical foundations that span science, engineering, math, and human & social sciences Methods for practice grounded in science 15

INCOSE GLRC, 10 October 2014 SUSTAINING THE EFFORT LEVERAGING PURDUE’S STRENGTHS AND COLLABORATING TO SOLVE PROBLEMS Systems DomainsInitiativesDisciplines Transportation Aviation Health Care …. Engineering Liberal Arts Science Management …. Preeminent Teams Interdisciplinary Clusters Strengthening Computer Science …. 16

INCOSE GLRC, 10 October 2014 PURDUE’S DISTINCTIVE ADVANTAGE OUR STRENGTH IS NOT JUST EXPLAINING, BUT ALSO DOING 17

INCOSE GLRC, 10 October 2014 INFRASTRUCTURE AND RESOURCES Infrastructure Dedicated space available in 2015 in renovated Industrial Engineering building (Grissom Hall) HUB environment for research and teaching Engineering professional education program Thirteen traditional colleges and academic units IU Medical School - Lafayette Resources A strategic commitment by College of Engineering to systems Faculty and the breadth and depth of ongoing research −System of systems signature area −NEXTRANS −Mellon Grand Challenge Exploratory Award Our students −2nd largest international student enrollment of any US university Our land-grant heritage 18
