Memory Verse: “AND HE SAID UNTO THEM, GO YE INTO ALL THE WORLD, AND PREACH THE GOSPEL TO EVERY CREATURE.” MARK 16:15
WHEN YOU READ THIS WEEK’S LESSON TITLE, WHAT WAS THE FIRST IMPRESSION UPON YOUR MIND ABOUT WHAT THE CALL TO PREACH IS? PERHAPS, THE NEXT THREE SLIDES WILL MEET YOUR EXPECTATION OF WHAT OF YOUR BELIEF.
Overwhelmingly, as the last three slides depicted, we associate the call to preach, with dynamic and charismatic effects demonstrated, in church, from a pulpit, by those who have accepted that call. But is that the sum total of what “The Call to Preach” entails? For the answer to that question, let’s examine our lesson text.
“The call to preach” was a commission that Christ gave to His disciples to set up His Kingdom among men. By the preaching of His gospel, the glad things of reconciliation to God through a mediator. Hitherto, the disciples had been sent only to the lost sheep of Israel, and were forbidden to go into the way of the gentiles, or into any of the Samaritans; but now their commissioned was enlarged, and they were authorized to go into all parts of the world, and preach the gospel of Christ to every creature, to gentiles; as well as, to Jews;
To every human, that is capable of receiving it. The disciples were to inform the world concerning Christ, the history of His life, and death, and resurrection; instruct them in the meaning and intention of these, and the advantages which the children of men have, or may have, hereby; and invite them; without exception to come and share in them. This is the gospel. And in summary of the gospel, the disciples would, by preaching, set before the world life and death, good and evil.
There are two noteworthy things that we must consider before we go any further. First, whereas Jesus selected and called a few to become licensed preacher’s of His gospel, Jesus selected and called all of His disciples to preach His gospel. So, while “The Call to Preach” from Jesus for some means preaching in formal church settings, from behind pulpits. Nevertheless, Jesus has also commissioned all of His disciples with a general“… Call to Preach” that is not dependant upon whether one holds an official position in a church. It is in the sense of this general “…Call to Preach,” from Christ, that He has commissioned all of His disciples to preach His gospel to the world.
And the second noteworthy thing about this lesson that we must mention is that, at the beginning of our Lesson, Jesus had to “upbraid” His disciples for their unbelief and fear. When one looks at the context of the lesson text, one can see why Jesus rebuked the disciples for their unbelief. In that His disciples might have had a reasonable expectation, of themselves being crucified which functioned to drown out their belief His resurrection. So, Jesus had sent them unmistakable proof, through eyewitness testimony, that He had indeed risen. The eyewitness testimony coupled with the His own testimony that He had previously sheared with His disciples should have been enough to convince His disciples of His resurrection, without the benefit of Him appearing to them. Yet, His disciples did not believe all the record that Jesus had provided, to them, of Himself.
This brings us to the final point of this week’s YPWW Lesson. Namely, that as Jesus gave His disciples the authority, through the testimony of His Word, and commanded them to preach to the world relating to His life, death, burial and resurrection. Likewise, Jesus has commissioned and empowered us for the same purpose. Now, go out in the power and strength of The Lord, and PREACH IT!
