Communism heavily influenced many forms of art in the 20 th century, especially literature. With the rise of communism, there was more fear and uncertain for the future. The 20 th century Russian literature has provided us wit characters who have lived throughout various periods of this time.
Time frame: Cusp of the revolution Zhivago family: “Riches to Rags” Uncertainty about what the revolution might be due to harsh war times
Dr. Zhivago saw first hand the effects of the revolution War against Germany, over crowding of hospitals Low morale, little faith; lead to popularity of revolutionaries
Initial feelings of freedom and what this could bring Feels of why the revolution was even occurring Duty of citizens during the revolution? Extent of participation.
During time of communist rule, there was much less faith in the government. Fear of government, Dehumanization: Comrade, Citizen and Gulags
Increased time spent in gulags Hostility and fighting to survive while still being degraded Increased need to stick together
In the beginning, the revolution seemed like the answer. Those who had money during the revolution, so longer did when the new regime took power. Communism led to citizens being stripped of their identity and dehumanized.
