Conducted by the Die Materials Specification Subcommittee November 1 st & 2 nd 2005 Die Materials Specification Task Group Die Steel Quality & Heat Treatment Acceptance Criteria

OBJECTIVE: Adding other die materials to the NADCA spec:  Revise Current #207 Specification :  Similar Acceptance Criteria for “All” Materials  Single Spec Criteria for “All” Die Materials  Limit Materials to H13/H11 & “modified” Compositions  Group similar compositions together  Range of compositions must not alter microstructures Die Materials Specification Task Group

Ford AMTD-DC2010 Rev K  16 grades

Die Materials Specification Task Group “Nominated” Grades & Supply Technical Data  18 grades  6 “categories ”  H13 (7)  H11 (1)  H11-low Si (3)  H11-hi Mo (3)  DIN (3)  DIN mod (1)

Die Materials Specification Task Group Group Materials by Similar Compositions:  “Grade A” = Premium H13  “Grade B” = Superior H13  “Grade C” = Modified H13  “Grade D” = DIN 2367  “Grade E” = Modified 2367  “Grade F” = H11  “Grade G” = Modified H11 – low Si  “Grade H” = Modified H11 – high Mo

Lo Cr, Hi Mo Carpenter Pyrotough max Moving Forward – September 2005: Review Groupings by Chemical Composition Review Hardening Temperatures within each Grade Review Capability Toughness within each Grade Consider Listing Only “Remelted” Grades Except ‘Premium H13 “Grade A” Consider Deleting “Shepherd Fracture” Grain Size Review Toughness Requirement After Heat Treating - Currently CVN required for “Superior” Grade H13 New Spec: CVN - Optional or Mandatory ? Evaluate “Acceptance” Values

Die Materials Specification Task Group Lo Cr, Hi Mo Carpenter Pyrotough max Moving Forward – November 2005: Finalized Groupings by Chemical Composition Reviewed Hardening Temperatures within each Grade Reviewed Capability Toughness within each Grade Single Inclusion limit for all grades; A - H Deleted “Shepherd Fracture” Grain Size Review Toughness Requirement After Heat Treating - Class 1: Mandatory CVN testing for heat treat quality Class 2: CVN testing for heat treat quality not required Evaluate “Acceptance” Values; 80% rule?

Die Materials Specification Task Group Lo Cr, Hi Mo Carpenter Pyrotough max Moving Forward: December 2005: Finalize hardened CVN spec limits January 2006: Approve draft of NADCA # February 2006: Release NADCA #
