3 “One day as Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret, the people were crowding around him and listening to the word of God.” (Luke 5:1) Γεννησαρ έ τ (Gennesaret) – “Gennesaret” a lake also called the Sea of Galilee or the Sea of Tiberius. The lake was 12 by 7 miles and 675 below the Mediterranean Sea.

4 “One day as Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret, the people were crowding around him and listening to the word of God.” (Luke 5:1) ἐ π ί κειμαι (epikeimai) – “crowding around” to press upon urgently. the pressure of a violent tempest.

11 “As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen…When he had gone a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John in a boat, preparing their nets.” (Mark 1:16, 19) “He saw at the water’s edge two boats, left there by the fishermen, who were washing their nets.” (Luke 5:2)

16 “So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink.” (Luke 5:7) κατανε ύ ω (kataneuo) – “signaled” to make a sign, to beckon.

17 When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!” (Luke 5:8) God is omniscient (truthful). אֵל אֱמֶת ('el 'emeth) – “God of truth” “Into thine hand I commit my spirit: thou hast redeemed me, O Lord God of truth.” (Psalm 31:5 KJV)

18 When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!” (Luke 5:8) God is omniscient. God is omnipotent. אֱת שַׁדַּי ('el Shaddai) – “God Almighty” “…the Lord appeared to him and said, ‘I am God Almighty.’” (Genesis 17:1b)

19 When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!” (Luke 5:8) God is omniscient. God is omnipotent. God is merciful. “And the Lord said, ‘I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.’” (Exodus 33:19)

For I am a man of unclean lips…and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty.”” (Isaiah 6:1-5) דָּמָה (damah) – “ruined” - to cease, be cut off, perish.

22 When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!” (Luke 5:8) Jesus is omniscient. Jesus is omnipotent. Jesus is merciful. “They were amazed at his teaching, because his words had authority… Jesus said sternly, “Come out of him!” …people brought to Jesus all who had various kinds of sickness, and laying his hands on each one, he healed them.” (Luke 4:32-40)

23 When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!” (Luke 5:9) Jesus is truthful. Jesus is powerful. Jesus is merciful. Jesus is holy. “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.” (Proverbs 1:7) When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!” (Luke 5:8)

24 “I have a message from God in my heart concerning the sinfulness of the wicked: There is no fear of God before their eyes. In their own eyes they flatter themselves too much to detect or hate their sin. The words of their mouths are wicked and deceitful; they fail to act wisely or do good. Even on their beds they plot evil; they commit themselves to a sinful course and do not reject what is wrong.” (Psalm 36:1-4)

26 When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!” (Luke 5:8) Jesus is truthful. Jesus is powerful. Jesus is merciful. Jesus is holy. “… to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free…” (Luke 4:18b)

27 When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!” (Luke 5:8) “Jesus left the synagogue and went to the home of Simon.” (Luke 4:38a) “When morning came, he called his disciples to him and chose twelve of them, whom he also designated apostles: Simon (whom he named Peter)…” (Luke 6:13-14a)

29 Then Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid; from now on you will fish for men.” (Luke 5:10b) “Opponents must be gently instructed, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth, and that they will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil, who has taken them captive to do his will.” (II Timothy 2:25-26) ζωγρ έ ω (zogreo) – “fish” to take alive, capture

30 “So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him.” (Luke 5:11) “I saw heaven standing open and there before me was a white horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True… He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood, and his name is the Word of God. The armies of heaven were following him, riding on white horses…” (Revelation 19:11-14) ἀ κολουθ έ ω (akoloutheo) – “followed” to join one as a disciple.

31 “After this, Jesus went out and saw a tax collector by the name of Levi sitting at his tax booth. “Follow me,” Jesus said to him, and Levi got up, left everything and followed him.” (Luke 5:27-28) “So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him.” (Luke 5:11)
