POST TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER Symptoms: Recurring nightmares reexperiencing the event hypervigilance Anxiety sleeplessness numbness dissociation
TWO TYPES Acute Stress Disorder: Same symptoms but only last 1 month Delayed: when situation not dealt with, person uses defenses to cope so symptoms subside until something triggers an acute reaction
Precipitating Events Serving in Combat or Living in a War Zone Suffering Personal or Family Victimization Living Through a Natural Disaster Surviving a Manmade Disaster`
Phases of community disaster Heroic phase Honeymoon phase Disillusionment phase Reconstruction phase
Interventions Allow denial in the beginning Eventually help clients channel floods of feelings into productive avenues for growth Critical Incident and Debriefing: educate about PTSD and help normalize the many symptoms they will experience Empathy is essential EMDR:eye movement desensitization and reprocessing
