3 Manual air conditioning system
Control panel e.g. Passat `97 Why might an air conditioning system be necessary? If the sunlight intensity is particularly high, the air on the inside of the vehicle will be heated up and can only be exchanged with air at ambient temperature. The interior temperature could heat up by more than 15°C. Between the intake point and air outlet, the air is heated up even more by several degrees. If a window or sunroof is opened, or the fans are turned up higher to make the situation more bearable, this often leads to draft and other nuisances, such as noise, exhaust emissions and pollen. These factors contribute towards increased body temperature and heart frequency of the occupants, which causes more sweating, the brain receives too little oxygen, the climate burden rises rapidly. The driver's sensory perception and power of deduction are reduced by approx. 20%, his/her ability to drive safely is considerably impaired. To reduce such effects, or to eradicate them completely, a system of air conditioning was created to bring the air in the vehicle down to a comfortable temperature; the system cleans and dehumidifies. Additional measures to clean the air are provided in the way of pollen filters and active charcoal filters. These are favoured very highly by people with allergies. The so-called climate stress is avoided, a lasting sense of well-being is given. • VSQ/TT • 3/18

5 Climatic Control panel with seat heater and auxiliary heater
e.g. Golf 2004 ECON On vehicles with booster heater, such as the Touran, this is deactivated in ECON mode! F318_097 • VSQ/TT • 5/18

6 Climatic Control panel Passat CC
Adjustment of the air flaps is by way of a servomotor. This means that the flexible shaft is no longer needed. The switches for the seat heating have 3 stages. The setting is displayed optically via LEDs. There are 6 (8) different control panels for the Climatic system: A/C controls, basic with 3 buttons A/C controls, seat heater with 3 buttons A/C controls, auxiliary heater with 4 buttons A/C controls, seat heater, auxiliary heater with 4 buttons A/C controls, windscreen heater with 4 buttons A/C controls, windscreen heater, seat heater with 4 buttons A/C controls, basic, Fahrenheit with 3 buttons A/C controls, basic, seat heater, Fahrenheit with 3 buttons F417_161 • VSQ/TT • 6/18

8 2-zone Climatronic Changeover of temperature display °C/°F Synchronisation of 2 zones e.g. Golf 2004 °C/°F changeover: Press and hold AUTO and ECON for longer than 2 seconds. Synchronise displays and, with that, adjustment of both channels by pressing AUTO over 2 second threshold via left jog wheel. On control panels without auxiliary heater, the button is marked with "DUAL". This is used to synchronise the temperatures on the left and right. • VSQ/TT • 8/18

9 2-zone Climatronic Control panel Passat CC
The change between Celsius and Fahrenheit reading is made exclusively via the menu in the combi-instrument. Individual buttons have a so-called toggle function, which makes it possible to change between two or more conditions with multiple operation. LEDs in the control elements show if the relevant function is active. In addition, the display of the radio or radio-navigation system shows information about the Climatronic system. Adjustment of the specified temperature for driver and front passenger side is done via the left or right rotary setting button. The specified value can be lowered or raised in 1°C increments. The minimal specified temperature is 18°C. The maximum temperature is 26°C. The Climatronic system is in unregulated range outside the maximum and minimum value. Air recirculation/ AUTO air recirculation During air recirculation mode the air recirculation flap is closed. In operating mode AUTO air recirculation, the air recirculation flap is adjusted automatically by the Climatronic system depending on the air quality detected by the air quality sensor. The air recirculation flap remains open below 4°C in AUTO air recirculation mode to prevent the windows from misting up. F417_165 • VSQ/TT • 9/18

10 2-zone Climatronic Status display on radio and navigation systems in the Passat CC RCD 310 LEDs in the control elements show if the relevant function is active. F417_174 RCD 510, RNS 310, RNS 510 In addition, the display of the radio or radio-navigation system shows information about the Climatronic system. This means, for example, that the temperature is displayed as a pop-up menu when the desired temperature is adjusted. F417_176 • VSQ/TT • 10/18

11 2-zone Climatronic Auto High and AUTO Low AUTO High Right LED lit
Fresh air blower runs with standard characteristic map. AUTO Low Left LED lit Fan speed is reduced by one stage. The air volume requirement in the vehicle depends on the number of occupants. For this reason, there is AUTO High and AUTO Low for automatic fresh air fan control of both fan speed modes. Both modes make allowance for the air volume that is required in heating mode for clear windows and in cooling mode for ventilation of the second seat row. The standard configuration of the automatic fresh air blower map is selected for AUTO High mode. Activation is indicated by illumination of the right LED in the AUTO button. In AUTO Low mode, the fresh air blower speed is always one stage lower than in AUTO High mode. Changeover between the two modes is indicated by a change in the display for fan speed and by illumination of the left LED in the AUTO button. The automatic settings selected by the Climatronic system can be changed manually at any time. • VSQ/TT • 11/18

16 Advantages of air conditioning systems
Comparison with and without air conditioning system Temperatures in a medium class passenger vehicle with: driving time of 1 hr. Ambient temperature 30°C car in direct sunlight Area With air conditioning No air conditioning Head Chest Feet Impaired concentration and reaction speed F208_001 • VSQ/TT • 16/18

17 Comfort zone Reaction of human body when subjected to uncomfortable climates Comfort zone A: Comfort zone between 20 to 22°C. B: Heart rate and body temperature rise – clammy hands on steering wheel, oxygen deficiency! C: Temperature increase to approx. 35°C, sensory perception and powers of reasoning reduced by 20%. That equates to a blood alcohol level of approx. 0.5 parts per thousand. Perspiration Stress/strain Heart rate Body temperature Climate stress Medium Low High F208_042 • VSQ/TT • 17/18

18 Comfort zone Air flow rate Comfort zone curves
Low outside temperature: e.g. -20°C High inside temperature 28°C High air flow rate 8 kg/min High outside temperature: e.g. 40°C Low inside temperature 23°C High air flow rate 10 kg/min Medium outside temperature: e.g. 10°C Low inside temperature 21.5°C Low air flow rate 4 kg/min Interior temperature Air flow rate Comfortable interior temperature is determined by prevailing outside temperature and sufficient air flow rate.
