1 Adventure Cycling Project Instrumental to English 420 Public Document Pedagogy

3 The Adventure Cycling Route...

4 Project Description... A collaborative effort to provide Adventure Cycling with educational support materials for their new, Underground Railroad Bicycle Route Will include the following deliverables: Map of the UNRR route with rollover bubbles that contain links to locations of interest along the route Textboxes that will appear at the bottom of the page, containing: historic information about each of the locations/stops information about locations of interest, including important, related information (addresses, contacts, etc.)

Proposal Stage We proposed to Joy Santee, a representative of Adventure Cycling, that we develop educational materials to accompany their new tour The Underground Railroad Conscious of Time Constraints, we offered two alternative print packages: A Participant Pack: historical material about the UGRR in general and their stops as well A Community Pack: publicity documents that local communities could use to learn about the trip and publicize their own involvement Joy chose Participant Pack

6 2. Adjustments Made Research Allen Brizee suggested, and we all developed, an idea to deliver this information electronically [instead of paper] New Deliverable: interactive map. How Work? The interactive ap of the UNRR route with rollover bubbles that contain links to locations of interest along the route Textboxes that will appear at the bottom of the page, containing: historic information about each of the locations/stops information about locations of interest, including important, related information (addresses, contacts, etc.) JOY APPROVED CHANGE

10 What Skills of the 505 Group Does the Project Reinforce?... Advanced research skills In-depth understanding of cultural issues related to the Underground Railroad along the route Pedagogical creativity, knowledge, and experience Teachers know what they are doing

11 Why in 505M?... Functions to prepare us for presenting/teaching the project to our students Encounter problems and determine how to minimize them in our classes Create models to show students (solid, well written, expectations) Help solidify a vocabulary for discussing the project with our classes Give us similar experiences as our students (which is necessary if we are to teach it)

Writing Collaboration with group members and client Time management Conventions of genres in which we are writing Further information about the Underground Railroad Greater information about Adventure Cycling Pedagogy Troubles our students may encounter Ways to deal with those troubles Various approaches to carrying out the project
