AMERICAN CORNER Jennifer Kim English Language Fellow Surabaya, Indonesia
American Corners American Corners are partnerships between the U.S. Embassy and major universities in Indonesia. American Corners provide access to current, accurate and reliable information about the political, economic, cultural, educational and social life in the United States via a collection of books, magazines and journals, CD- ROMs, DVDs and access to internet and online databases, and through local programming to the general public. Eleven American Corners are located at host institutions throughout the country.

Did you know…? The number of U.S. visas issued to Indonesian students has risen by 25% over the past two years. Both governments are committed to continuing to increase the number of students studying in one anothers country in the next five years.
Under the Higher Education Partnership, the U.S. will invest over $165 million from to promote educational cooperation with Indonesia. This includes support for expanded academic exchanges, including the new Fulbright Indonesia Research, Science and Technology (FIRST) program for U.S. and Indonesian students and scholars, the Community College Initiative for Indonesian students and faculty, support for Americans studying languages in Indonesia, and English Language programs for Indonesians. II.Fulbright English Teaching Assistant -Who are ETAs and what do they do? -What can ETAs share with participants at the American Corner?
English Language Fellow Program The EL Fellow Program fosters mutual understanding, promotes English language learning and enhances English teaching capacity abroad. –Through projects sponsored by U.S. embassies, EL Fellows share their professional expertise, hone their skills, gain international experience and learn about other cultures. –EL Fellows model and demonstrate up-to-date TEFL classroom practices that help foster thoughtful and responsible behavior in students and teachers of English.
Possible ELF involvement activities/programs: Teacher Training for university students and mentoring new teachers –discussion on teaching methods –lesson plans –curriculum development –classroom management/organization Discussion on current events/social issues U.S. History / Social Studies (race, culture, politics, government) Theatre group Speech class (public speaking, building self-esteem) Seminars related to education and teaching –Teaching English to Young Learners –Promoting character building through literature –Effective time management in the classroom –Business English, English and Art (photography, painting)

Fulbright English Teaching Assistant The Fulbright English Teaching Assistant (ETA) Program places recent college graduates and young professionals as English teaching assistants in primary and secondary schools or universities overseas –Improving foreign students English language abilities and knowledge of the United States while increasing the U.S. student's own language skills and knowledge of the host country. –ETAs may also pursue individual study/research plans in addition to their teaching responsibilities. –http://exchanges.state.gov/us/program/fulbright-english-teaching-assistant-program#sthash.47odIqSq.dpuf

Indonesia English Language Fellows Insightful Websites 1. Mengajar English Mengajar English is the open-source home for information on teaching English in Indonesia. The website is a collaborative effort among between English Language Fellows (ELFs), Fulbright English Teaching Assistants (ETAs), Peace Corps Volunteers (PCVs) and local Indonesian English teachers. 2. Indonesiaful Indonesiaful.com is an independent website managed and operated exclusively by Fulbright English Teaching Assistant grantees based in Indonesia.
