1 Major Art Modality Utilized: Artistic Language Multiple Intelligences Addressed: Linguistic & Interpersonal Lesson Abstract: The students build an emotional connection to the subject matter, as well as demonstrate their knowledge of a topic, by personifying and adopting the point of view of someone or thing that was present but silent in the selected literature. For this example we are using this strategy in conjunction with Revolutionary War literature, in particular, Patrick Henrys Speech to the Virginia Convention.Speech to the Virginia Convention Materials Needed: An image depicting the subject matter. (Peter F. Rothermel's Patrick Henry Before the Virginia House of Burgesses), journal, pen or pencilPatrick Henry Before the Virginia House of Burgesses Procedures: Project the image on your screen. Brainstorm and develop a list of details from the picture (apart from Patrick Henry himself) that stand out, seem important, or in some way resonates with them. Encourage looking for details. Once the list is complete, have each student select their favorite detail. Now, give them a single, higher level thinking writing question, such as, How might you react to Patrick Henrys speech considering that the colonies might be going to war? Consider your students level and ability, and assign the length of time you want them to write. Next, have the students write in response to the question as though they were the detail that they selected from the list. Select volunteers to read their writing. Assessment: The activity is an assessment of knowledge. Further assess their knowledge by asking volunteers to read their response and then discuss their thoughts.
