Robert E. Lee Before the Civil War Lee was born in Westmoreland County, Virginia on January 19 th, 1807. He is the 5 th son to Henry Lee. He was known as Light Horse Harry. Lee attended WestPoint to prepare for the wars. Lee also fought in the Mexican War before the Civil War had began.
Robert E. Lee During The Civil War Robert E. Lee was the Confederate States general during the Civil War, though he didnt support slavery. He stopped McClellan's threat to Richmond during the Seven Days Battle (June 26-July 2, 1861). On April 9, 1865, Lee surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant at the village of Appomattox Court House.
Robert E. Lee Accomplishments Lee was a Military Advisor to President Davis of the Confederacy. He assumed the presidency of Washington College. (Now named Washington and Lee University.) While he trained at West Point, and in the Mexican War became chief engineer of the central army in Mexico. (1847) In 1852, he became Superintendent of the Military Academy.
Robert E. Lee History He grew up in an area where George Washington was still a living memory. Educated in the Alexandria, Virginia, schools, he obtained appointment to West Point in 1825. On June 30, 1831, he married Mary Ann Randolph Custis. Lee reached his death on October 12 th, 1870.
Ulysses S. Grant Before the Civil War Grants real name was Hiram Ulysses S. Grant. He was born April 27, 1822 in Point Pleasant, Ohio. He was educated at U.S. Military Academy, West Point, and New York. Grant graduated July 1, 1843.
