Serum Vitamin C (mg/dl) by Salad Intake Dietary Patterns Differ Between Urban And Rural Cancer Survivors & Are Associated With BMI Background JOURNAL OF THE ACADEMY OF NUTRITION AND DIETETICS Miller P, et al. J Acad Nutr Diet. 2012; 112 (June).  More than 1/2 of the 13 million cancer survivors in the US are > 65 years  Survivors are at increased risk for cancer recurrence, new primary & secondary tumors, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, & other chronic diseases  Excess weight & suboptimal dietary patterns may contribute to increased risk  Dietary patterns are defined as the nature, quality, quantity, proportions, & frequency of foods & beverages consumed in the diet  Patterns likely differ between urban & rural survivors due to differences in educational attainment, financial resources, & access to healthier food options, among other factors

Serum Vitamin C (mg/dl) by Salad Intake Dietary Patterns Differ Between Urban And Rural Cancer Survivors & Are Associated With BMI Objectives JOURNAL OF THE ACADEMY OF NUTRITION AND DIETETICS Miller P, et al. J Acad Nutr Diet. 2012; 112 (June). (1)To compare dietary patterns of urban & rural cancer survivors (2)To examine whether these dietary patterns were associated with BMI

Serum Vitamin C (mg/dl) by Salad Intake Dietary Patterns Differ Between Urban And Rural Cancer Survivors & Are Associated With BMI Study Design & Population JOURNAL OF THE ACADEMY OF NUTRITION AND DIETETICS Miller P, et al. J Acad Nutr Diet. 2012; 112 (June).  Secondary analysis of existing data from the Reach Out to Enhance Wellness (RENEW) trial, a distance- based diet & physical activity intervention  n = 729 survivors who underwent screening for RENEW  long-term (>5y), older adult (>65y), overweight/ obese (BMI: mg/k2), survivors of colorectal, breast, & prostate cancer  Geographically diverse population from 20 US states

Dietary Patterns Differ Between Urban And Rural Cancer Survivors & Are Associated With BMI Data Collection & Statistical Analysis JOURNAL OF THE ACADEMY OF NUTRITION AND DIETETICS Miller P, et al. J Acad Nutr Diet. 2012; 112 (June). Data Collection  Two minute telephone surveys as part of the screening assessment  Included two 24-hour dietary recalls Statistical Analysis  PCA to derive dietary patterns separately for rural & urban residents  Multivariable linear regression to evaluate associations between patterns & BMI

Dietary Patterns Differ Between Urban And Rural Cancer Survivors & Are Associated With BMI Conclusions JOURNAL OF THE ACADEMY OF NUTRITION AND DIETETICS Miller P, et al. J Acad Nutr Diet. 2012; 112 (June). (1)Dietary patterns differ in composition between rural & urban survivors & are associated with BMI (2)Findings from our study support an important role of dietary patterns on weight status (3)Greater adherence to the “high reduced-fat dairy, cereal, fruits, & nuts” pattern among rural survivors & the “high fruits & vegetables” pattern among urban survivors was associated with lower BMI (P-trend < 0.05 for both)

Dietary Patterns Differ Between Urban And Rural Cancer Survivors & Are Associated With BMI Future Implications JOURNAL OF THE ACADEMY OF NUTRITION AND DIETETICS Miller P, et al. J Acad Nutr Diet. 2012; 112 (June). (1)Rural/urban differences should be considered when designing public health interventions targeting diet modification & weight management (2)Continued research efforts are needed to examine the role of geographic location on both diet & obesity in this population (3)Longitudinal research that examines the effect of dietary patterns, as well as change in dietary patterns, on BMI & other health-related endpoints would greatly extend the current findings.
