Unit I Topic 2-7 MAC Protocols for Ad Hoc Wireless Networks Department of Computer Science and Engineering Kalasalingam University 1 CSE 6007 Mobile Ad Hoc Wireless Networks
Outline 2 Introduction Topic 2 : Issues and Design Goals of a MAC Protocol for Ad Hoc Wireless Networks Topic 3 : Classification of MAC Protocols Topic 4 : Contention Based Protocols Topic 5 : Contention Based Protocols with Reservation Mechanisms Topic 6 : Contention Based Protocols with Scheduling Mechanism Topic 7 : MAC Protocols that use Directional Antennas
3 Introduction Nodes in an ad hoc network share a common broadcast radio channel Access to this shared medium should be controlled in such a manner that all nodes receive a fair share of bandwidth. Characteristics of wireless medium is completely different from those of wired medium Ad Hoc Networks have to address node mobility, limited band width availability, error-prone broadcast channel, hidden and exposed terminal problems and power constraints.
