CHEN CHIEN-TUNG NCTU Department of Architecture CHANG TENG-WEN NYUST Department of Digital Media Design 5/ Introduction Site environment becomes design supporting system 1)Intuitional manipulate 2D or 3D objects 2)1:1 visual feedback 3)Real time visual feedback and are easily adjusted depending on different situation 4)Portable for any situation 1) Imagine about 1:1scale 2) Imagine about texture 3) Imagine about connecting with site Intuitional design behavior on Site

CHEN CHIEN-TUNG NCTU Department of Architecture CHANG TENG-WEN NYUST Department of Digital Media Design 6/ Pilot Study Life-Sized Projector-Based Dioramas ( Low, Welch, et al., 2001) 2.1 Display On Site ( Chen and Chang, 2006) Projected precise section paper

CHEN CHIEN-TUNG NCTU Department of Architecture CHANG TENG-WEN NYUST Department of Digital Media Design 7/ Intuitional manipulation Navigating 3D Information Space with 6 Degree of Freedom Devices (Lu, 2004 ) Pilot Study

CHEN CHIEN-TUNG NCTU Department of Architecture CHANG TENG-WEN NYUST Department of Digital Media Design 8/ Spatially Augmented Reality Design Environment System Arhitecture

CHEN CHIEN-TUNG NCTU Department of Architecture CHANG TENG-WEN NYUST Department of Digital Media Design 9/ hardware architecture LED light , to locate where the gesture is. Behavior of fingers decide what will happen. Manipulation virtual image by gesture System Arhitecture

CHEN CHIEN-TUNG NCTU Department of Architecture CHANG TENG-WEN NYUST Department of Digital Media Design 10/ Software architecture By WEB CAM capturing where the finger is. FLASH Actoinscript analyze the point which is white. OnMouseDown and the location of finger decide the design command. design command : move, select by rectangle enlarge/reduction System Arhitecture

CHEN CHIEN-TUNG NCTU Department of Architecture CHANG TENG-WEN NYUST Department of Digital Media Design 11/ Purpose of experiment By asking participants to operate SARDE, we understand whether this system useful or not, and some advice from participations. 4.2 Participant The participants are those who learn architecture design within two to three semesters. Students in these periods have design experience but still not very familiar with using drawings to express spatially ideas. We got experiment data about 4 participants. Experiment results will presented as table (page.15). Experiment

CHEN CHIEN-TUNG NCTU Department of Architecture CHANG TENG-WEN NYUST Department of Digital Media Design 12/ Steps of experiment 1)Participants are asked to use 2D drawing, such as plan, elevation, and section, to make design decisions. In this stage, we only provide 2D site information. 2)Participants are brought to site and operate SARDE. They will see the full scale 2D draft which is combined with site enviornment. 3)The experiment stop when the participants want to stop. 4)After the experiment, we discuss with participants immediately. 5)After the experiment we analysis and summarized the video tape to clear the most important design behavior. Experiment

CHEN CHIEN-TUNG NCTU Department of Architecture CHANG TENG-WEN NYUST Department of Digital Media Design 13/18 Step.1 Provided 2D site information (a)(b) Site photos (C) Site Plan scale 1:30 Step.2 Participant proposes draft design with elevation and plan (d) Design plan (e) iso-metre perspective (f) elevations Process of experiment Experiment

CHEN CHIEN-TUNG NCTU Department of Architecture CHANG TENG-WEN NYUST Department of Digital Media Design 14/18 Experiment Process (a)1:1 SARDE (b)Participant define by his body refering the projected surface (c)Participant pretended to touch the table (d)Participant simulates how to writing on desk (e)Participant choose blue color to represent glass (f) Infill color. (g) Readjust infill area (h) Decide the location of poster (i)Duplicate poster (j) Seeing in different position 4.4. Experiment

CHEN CHIEN-TUNG NCTU Department of Architecture CHANG TENG-WEN NYUST Department of Digital Media Design 15/ Participants’ advices Participant 4 Participant 3 Participant 2 Participant 1 Better efficiency ○ ○ ○ More confidences ○ ○ ○ Seek more problems ○ ○ ○ Wish more detail ○ ○ Waste labor ○ ○ Possibility ○ ○ More than 2D object ○ ○ More manipulation ○ ○ ○ Close to surface ○ ○ Experiment Results

CHEN CHIEN-TUNG NCTU Department of Architecture CHANG TENG-WEN NYUST Department of Digital Media Design 16/ DOS design behavior (Schon and Wiggins ) Seeing Moving (Chen and Cheng ) Experiment Results

CHEN CHIEN-TUNG NCTU Department of Architecture CHANG TENG-WEN NYUST Department of Digital Media Design 17/ Significance and feedback Our research propose a new vision to let designer seems to enter his imaginary, and let design behavior return to human scale behavior. Discussion

CHEN CHIEN-TUNG NCTU Department of Architecture CHANG TENG-WEN NYUST Department of Digital Media Design 18/ Limitation and Future studies 1. This research establish an designer-design interactive model, We believe that more display technology is developed, more interactive design support system possibilities could be explored. 2. Combine 3D perspective with full scale elevation, and detect the position of designer’s eye with immediately perspective adjust feedback. 3. Projected surface with precise scale and changing scale quickly maybe helpful in urban design, when thinking in different scale levels. Discussion End
