TPGES Understanding the Observation Process Presented by: Mike York, KDE Laura Dedic & Sherry Lovely, Madison Central High School
Overview O How prepare for the process of observing and being observed. We need to know the framework O How we manage the actual observation. O How do we manage CIITS and EDS? O How do we secure our work O What do we get or see when the observation details are recorded, saved and shared? O How do we structure and manage the pre and post conferencing? O Do we have preconference? Why or why not? How do they work? O What happens in the post conference? Do we record a performance level before or after the post conference? Why? O How does this feel? Does it feel different from the former observation system? How can it make us better at what we do? O What do you think about the peer observation process?
How do you prepare for the process of observing and being observed? What is the framework? O Consider the FfT when we plan and deliver the lessons and observers need to know what we are looking for O Test - Teachscape O Not content or grade specific O Exemplary – student centered O Turning over control
How we manage the actual observation? How we manage the actual observation? Do we script old school – pen and paper? From Pencil to paper, Ipad to Excel O How is this different as far as what we record? O Evidence vs. interpretation O Video
How do we manage CIITS and EDS? Copy and paste, cut and paste, retype everything? O Different techniques can be tried, it will be a personal preference O Excel
How do we secure our work? Do we back our material up in Word or an email so we don’t lose it if CIITS / EDS goes funny? O Save and save some more O Different venues O Flash Drive, laptop, email
What do we get or see when the observation details are recorded, saved and shared?
How do we structure and manage the pre and post conferencing? Pre-conference O Short, informal lesson plan, and preconference questions Post-conference O Sit down to discuss each standard O Scores are already recorded, but can be changed during the discussion
Does it feel different from the former observation system? How can it make us better at what we do? First observation compared to second and third O Principal’s perspective O Educator’s perspective
Peer Observations? Who do you think should do peer observations? O Stepping outside your content O Stepping outside your grade level What difference can a peer observation make? O New perspective on prior knowledge O Cross content collaboration leads to continuity for students
Summary of Evidence? Summative O Under the Summary of Evidence tab in CIITS you will add your final rankings for each teacher and submit. O Here is an example of what it looks like for High School.
Summary of Evidence? Summative O Once you submit each teacher will receive an email link to review the final summative.
Next Steps? O Scaling up O Training more folks O Explore CIITS (EDS) …one step at a time…
