TEEX Leadership Symposium January 2014 L. Pat Ekiss My Revelation

I am part of the past, true. But I am also a very real part of the present. I want so badly to be part of the future. You do, too! Share your knowledge and experience. INFLUENCE those around you. If we sit idly by and do nothing, we have no right to complain. TEEX Leadership Symposium January 2014 L. Pat Ekiss

You can decide today to literally change the future of the Fire Service Our world is changing, so is your profession Change makes it fluid, moldable, an EXCELLENT opportunity to engage Your influence can drive our newest members to carry on tradition, but to also make new ones! People will tell you, “You can’t do it, you’ll never succeed.” TEEX Leadership Symposium January 2014 L. Pat Ekiss

Given the opportunity, an influential leader can have a positive effect on so many. TEEX Leadership Symposium January 2014 L. Pat Ekiss SdQ

(Recap) Our People Understanding 85 – 10 – 5 85% 10% TEEX Leadership Symposium January 2014 L. Pat Ekiss

First, decide to be a positive influence. Understand that you are a leader among future leaders. You must choose to no longer accept mediocrity. ‘Almost’ isn't good enough. You’ll accept nothing short of excellence. The future leadership skills and abilities of those around you are DIRECTLY related to how well you do your job today. TEEX Leadership Symposium January 2014 L. Pat Ekiss So, how do we do this?

So, how do we do this? Cont’d. Don’t get caught up in the “stuff” work –You’re expected to know that well –You get no extra points here What sets you apart from the others –Mold your people –Set your expectations high and lead by example TEEX Leadership Symposium January 2014 L. Pat Ekiss

Don’t lose sight of the total mission True, your boss has expectations –Focus on those and get the work done! Your people have expectations, too –They are different but not less important Never forget that they are the future of our profession TEEX Leadership Symposium January 2014 L. Pat Ekiss So, how do we do this? Cont’d.

City Managers come and go… Opportunities are lost once the TV comes on or the refrigerator door opens TEEX Leadership Symposium January 2014 L. Pat Ekiss So, how do we do this? Cont’d. Chief Officers can come up with multiple excuses. We need to find the means to change this.

Watch what you’re doing. Three can change one faster than one can change three. However, be cautious if you use this in reverse. If you leave a strong, influential leader alone (without a mentor), you may lose a strong leader. It takes a strong leader to ENFORCE the rules...but your influence will SAVE LIVES! TEEX Leadership Symposium January 2014 L. Pat Ekiss So, how do we do this? Cont’d.

Paul Barnabas Timothy TEEX Leadership Symposium January 2014 L. Pat Ekiss Find a Mentor

Align your goals with those of the organization To inspire and influence those around you, you must clearly indicate that you understand the mission of your department as well as the inner workings of the organization. You have to be a team player! As a leader you have to sell the mission…a mission that you may have had no hand in creating. Look for ways to do just that. I firmly believe that if our profession is lacking anywhere, it is lacking most in this area. TEEX Leadership Symposium January 2014 L. Pat Ekiss

The weakest link Of 32 Fire Chiefs polled, where do you think they said the weakest link in their organization was? If we polled 32 Officers, what would their answer be? TEEX Leadership Symposium January 2014 L. Pat Ekiss

Pride Protection Service Leadership Dedication Honor Commitment Challenge Integrity Excellence

In Turmoil Stagnant Lacking Leadership Struggling Weak Fragmented Behind Surviving Immature Dysfunctional

Pray TEEX Leadership Symposium January 2014 L. Pat Ekiss  For me, the single most important thing I can do  For safety, courage, strength, wisdom and patience  Include your boss and civic leaders

You can influence your future, and those around you. Share your knowledge. Accept only excellence. Start with yourself. There is so much value in your knowledge and experience. They DO get it! TEEX Leadership Symposium January 2014 L. Pat Ekiss So, can we do this?

We are never too old to learn…and we should never be so disconnected that we don’t share our knowledge and experience in a way that produces positive and inspiring influence on those around us. TEEX Leadership Symposium January 2014 L. Pat Ekiss Of course we can

I’m talking to me I don’t have the answers I’m still learning We have a huge responsibility TEEX Leadership Symposium January 2014 L. Pat Ekiss One last thing before we close

TEEX Leadership Symposium January 2014 L. Pat Ekiss Make a Difference! Max did. INFLUENCE those around you.

Thank you! Go Influence! Pat Ekiss City of Taylor, Fire Department Office TEEX Leadership Symposium January 2014 L. Pat Ekiss
