Fire Safety By: Jessica Correa Taylor Clark Nichole Payton Starts with you!
SPARKY AND THE WHITE HOUSE My name is Sparky. When I was just a little spotted puppy, I spotted a fire. “Ahrooooooo!” I howled. The firefighters zoomed up in their bright red truck and put the fire out. The President of the United States called to thank me. It is part of my job being Sparky the Fire Dog. I keep thinking about that call from the president. If I were president, I would make the White House the most fire-safe house in the country. As president, I would make sure all the napkins, towels, and dog toys were away from the hot stove. Then I would check on the bones buried near our Outside Meeting Place. I would make sure that lit candles were never left in a room without a grown-up. All matches and lighters would be kept in a locked cabinet. My dog friends and I would vote on who would test the smoke alarms every month. I’d tell people how to do a Home Fire Inspection. They would learn to spot things that could cause a fire.
Listening Check What are some things that could cause a fire? What are some things that Sparky would do to make the White House safe? Why do you think fire safety is important?
1 st Step: STOP Stop where you are...DO NOT RUN! Running will provide more air to the fire and will make it burn faster, causing a more severe burn Make sure to put your hands over your face and keep your mouth covered!
2 nd Step: DROP! Make sure you drop to you knees on a safe place on the ground. Always keep your hands to your face and mouth covered!
3 rd Step: ROLL! Make sure to roll over all areas of your clothing that are on fire. The rolling, or rocking, back and forth extinguishes the fire by eliminating the air supply Keep hands to your face and roll until all of the fire is out.
