Praxis 2014 - Project Work and Internship: impacts on labour market and society Internship: an added value for internationally recognised qualifications in the field of metalworking Dr. Eng. Luca Costa IIS Progress, Italy luca.costa@iisprogress.it Genoa (I), 26/09/2014

L. Costa - Internship: an added value for internationally recognised qualifications… IIS Progress Gruppo Istituto Italiano della Saldatura 2 Significance of Welding and joining Welding is used by preference in the industrial sectors which manufacture products made of weldable (metallic and non metallic) materials. Welding frequently plays an essential role in product design and constitutes an essential al step in the value added at the manufacturing companies. Welding and joining are important economic factors during manufacturing of technical products and also often represents the only possible way to manufacture large parts. Proportion of added value due to welding in mechanical and apparatus engineering (IIW, 2012) Value added in 2007 in Europe in wedling (Reproduced courtesy: DVS)

L. Costa - Internship: an added value for internationally recognised qualifications… IIS Progress Gruppo Istituto Italiano della Saldatura 4 The role of personnel in welding fabrication Welding is a complex technology, involving –Material metallurgy –Production systems –Quality management –Design Since welding has been considered a science, qualification and experience (i.e. competence) of personnel started playing a significant role: –Welding coordinators –Welding inspectors In consideration of the importance of the industrial experience, several welding institutes were founded in Europe: –IIS started running post graduate courses in 1951 –Internship was already considered as a key part of the training IIS Branches in italy

L. Costa - Internship: an added value for internationally recognised qualifications… IIS Progress Gruppo Istituto Italiano della Saldatura 5 Why internship in IIS Training? The Italian Institute of Welding (IIS) is a private non-profit agency, founded in 1948 as an association of individuals and legal entities, whose main tasks are: training, research, certification, troubleshooting, and technical assistance in the field of welding IIS operates multiple services in the filed of welding and ealted activities, including: –Education and training –Certification of personnel, ccompanied and products –Research and laboratory –Technical assistance, NDT and engineering services –Standardization, publications, media The turnover is aroun 28 Mln €, 220 employees (around 150 Enginers)

L. Costa - Internship: an added value for internationally recognised qualifications… IIS Progress Gruppo Istituto Italiano della Saldatura 6 The international system of qualification In 1978, an European Council for Cooperation in Welding was created among European welding institutes to develop harmonized systems for the qualification of personnel In the 90’s the European qualifications system was created by EWF (European federation for joining, cutting and allied processes): –European Welding Engineer (EWE); –European welding Inspector – Engineer (EWI-E). In the 2000 years, the European system was enlarged on the Intercontinental scale, having the recognition of the IIW (international institute of welding): –International welding Engineer (IWE) –International welding Inspector (IWI-C) The IIW network

L. Costa - Internship: an added value for internationally recognised qualifications… IIS Progress Gruppo Istituto Italiano della Saldatura 7 The international system of qualification

L. Costa - Internship: an added value for internationally recognised qualifications… IIS Progress Gruppo Istituto Italiano della Saldatura 8 The role of intenship in the qualification processes The qualification programs include a compulsory practical part (120 hours), to be possibly considered as internship: –Demonstration and use of technologies –Practical work on design of industrial processes –Industrial experiences The industrial request of this qualified personnel is enforced by standards, resulting in a compulsory presence of IWE and IWI in the welding industry: –Industry (and standards) require competence, not only qualification –This lead to the development of University master degree, being the added value mainly the internship Origin of participants to IIS training coures Partnership with Italian universities: Ferrara, Bari, L'Aquila, Genoa

L. Costa - Internship: an added value for internationally recognised qualifications… IIS Progress Gruppo Istituto Italiano della Saldatura 9 Master advanced welding engineering Training Partners: –IIS (IIS Progress), –Innovative Technologies for Environmental Control and Sustainable Development Consortium (TICASS); –Italian association for Robotics and automation (SIRI) MAWE Master's course covers automation, metallurgy and materials science, welding processes, design and quality control. Students that attend MAWE course and successfully pass the evaluation process will receive both the Master Diploma and the title of International Welding Engineer. Master duration is of 12 months, for a total of 1.500 hours: –500 hours of lectures; –680 hours of personal training and to the thesis preparation; –300 hours of internship (stage / project work); –20 hours of monitoring and work orientation activities A wide sponsorship will ensure internship opportunities Training partners
