What is it? The AARC applied and received certification with an international tutor training program that is part of the College Reading and Learning Association. It means that they have seen our plan for training at three levels and they approve us certifying tutors at those four levels. Woo hoo! The four levels are: Master Tutor (Level 3) Level 2 Level 1 Level 0 When you begin at the AARC you are a 0 (sad but true!).
WHY DO IT? Tutors who choose to move up: Make more money: Level 0 $9.00 Level 1$9.25 Level 2$9.50 Master Tutor $10.00 Serve in leadership capacities: Tutor trainers Program Assistants Workshop Star Presenters Graduate Students Program Director (What? Yep, we just hired one to direct Science!) The night we honored Kerron Joseph as Master Tutor-- Now he is the Science Program Director!
HOW DOES IT HAPPEN? At the first program meeting of the semester, your PD (program director) will give you a task list for moving up to the next level. A tutor can certify only one level per semester. (We do not certify in the summer) Credits can roll into the next semester in case you decide that you cannot complete a level in a given semester. No tutor can tutor here without training! All newbies will complete certain mandatory tasks even if they are not certifying. In May, we honor those who have certified at the AARC Awards Celebration. Check the task lists on the tutor playbook page to see how you stand! If there are errors tell your PD.
WHAT DOES IT MEAN? Your certification is important for the following reasons: 1.If you were to transfer to another school and work as a tutor there, they would likely honor your certification. 2.It looks impressive on your resume to list this as an honor and an official certification. 3.You will have something else to hang on your wall besides your diploma!
