BASICS OF THE DEFENSE II. WHAT WE HAD ALWAYS LOOKED FOR IN A DEFENSIVE END. IN A DEFENSIVE END. III. ABILITY TO BRING PRESSURE IV. SAME TECHNIQUES AS OUR MICHIGAN 50 ANGLE DEFENSE ANGLE DEFENSE V. NEED FOR MORE SPEED ON THE FIELD VI. TYPE OF PLAYERS WE HAVE IN THE PROGRAM

BASICS OF THE DEFENSE PROBLEMS PROBLEMS I. DID OUR PERSONNEL FIT THE ? II. COULD OUR STAFF TEACH MAN-TO-MAN PRES COVERAGE ? JAY SAWVILL (SIU) III. COULD WE TEACH THE DEFENSE WITHOUT IT BEING HELTER SKELTER. WHY ARE WE STUNTING ? IV. COULD WE HAVE A DEFENSIVE BREAKDOWN OF 4 COACHES ? V. # 1 QUESTION- HANDLING A TIGHT-END SIDE-WORSE-WHAT IF DOUBLE TIGHT END ? OFF TACKLE VI. HOW MUCH DO WE PUT IN ? GOERGIA MILITARY, WEST VIRGINIA, WAKE FOREST, TULSA, MEMPHIS, & MISSISSIPPI STATE VII. WHAT IF PEOPLE GET HURT-SUB FOR EACH POSITION. VIII. WILL FALCONS BE PILL OR FORCE ? WHAT HAVE WE ALWAYS DONE ? IX. WILL ZONE BLOCKING STOP OUR STUNTING?

BASICS OF THE DEFENSE III. BASIC CONCEPTS WE MUST REMEMBER- 1. THIS IS NOT A GIMMICK DEFENSE-YOU MUST STILL DO A GREAT JOB OF TEACHING BASIC TECHNIQUES 2. THERE WILL POSSIBLY BE OFFENSIVE SETS THAT WE MAY NOT WANT TO BE IN THE STACK AGAINST 3. DEFENSE IS STILL REACTING, PURSUING, & TACKLING 4. AFTER RESEARCHING THE DEFENSE TEACH WHAT OUR PLAYERS ARE CAPABLE OF PERFORMING

BASICS OF THE DEFENSE IV. PAST DEFENSIVE SCHEMES ARKANSAS MONSTER ARKANSAS MONSTER MICHIGAN 50 ANGLE MICHIGAN 50 ANGLE SPLIT SPLIT PRESENT PRESENT A. REASON? #1. EVOLUTION OF OFFENSIVE SETS #2. TEACHING TIME/LAZY-50 READ- SCRAPE/SHUFFLE/FAST/SLOW/SPLIT/HOLD READS #2. TEACHING TIME/LAZY-50 READ- SCRAPE/SHUFFLE/FAST/SLOW/SPLIT/HOLD READS

BASICS OF THE DEFENSE V. KNOWING HOW THE THEORY DIFFERS- A. TYPES OF PLAYBOOK/VIDEO INFORMATION- WAKE FOREST,TULSA. MEMPHIS,MISSISIPPI STATE, AIR FORCE, WEST VIRGINIA, & GEO. MILITARY-WE HAVE TO TAKE WHAT FITS US AND WHAT OUR KIDS CAN DO-WHAT MATCHES OUR PAST THEORIES OF DEFENSIVE PLAY. B. 2005/2006 WE PLAYED 5 STRONG SAFETIES NONE OF WHICH COULD HAVE BEEN A 50 INSIDE LINEBACKER

BASICS OF THE DEFENSE VI. DOWN 3- NOSE GUARD & DEFENSIVE ENDS A. WEARE LOOKING FOR ATHLETES INSTEAD OF THE TRADITIONAL DOWN 3 IN THE MICHIGAN 50 ANGLE DEFENSE. OUR NOSEGUARD WAS THE SAME TYPE OF ATHLETE AND OUR DEFENSIVE ENDS WERE WHAT HAD BEEN OUR DEFENSIVE ENDS IN OUR 50. ** THEY ALL MUST BE ABLE TO RUN-RUN-RUN B. NO 2 GAP PLAYERS. THEY ARE MOVING ON EVERY OFFENSIVE PLAY-NEVER TAKE ONAN OFENSIVE BLOCKER 1-ON-1. C. TECHNIQUES- WE WANTED TO MAINTAIN OUR 3 WAY GO. D. STEMMING- EXTREMELY EFFECTIVE.

BASICS OF THE DEFENSE VII. EXPLAIN HOW WE WANT OUR DOWN 3 TO SLANT-WE MUST BE ABLE TO REDIRECT A. KEY- DE WILL READ THE OFFENSIVE LINEMAN HE IS SLANTING TO. OUR DE IS ACTUALLY ENDING UP IN EITHER A 3 TECH OR A 7 TECH. B. NG WILL BE READING THE GUARD TO THE SIDE HE IS SLANTING. HE BASICALLY IS IN A 1 TECH EVERYTIME. ** OPEN SETS/OBVIOUS PASS-DE SET IN A WIDE 5. WE WILL TRY NOT TO PASS RUSH FROM A 4 TECH-SPEED RUSH.

BASICS OF THE DEFENSE VIII. LINEBACKERS- WE ARE PLAYING THIS DEFENSE EITHER BECAUSE WE DONT HAVE STUD INSIDE LINEBACKERS OR WE HAVE TOPLAY DIFFERENT PLAYERS BECAUSE OF THE DIFFERENT TYPE OF KIDS WE NEED TO USE TO DEFEND THE SPREAD PASSING ATTACKS. A. MIDDLE LINEBACKER DOESNT HAVE TO BE THE BEST LINEBACKER GAP RESPONSIBILITY- A GAP OPPOSITE NOSEGUARD.EXPLAIN HOW DIFFERENT BACKFIELD FLOWS TAKE HIM OUT OF THE A GAP IMMEDIATELY- TOSS SWEEP. 1. KEY- FULLBACK. NO FULLBACK QUARTERBACK 2. ALIGNMENT- 4 ½ TO 5 YARDS 3. ALWAYS ATTACK DOWNHILL-NEVER PARALLEL

BASICS OF THE DEFENSE VIII. LINEBACKERS (CONTINUED) B. OUTSIDE LINEBACKERS- GAP RESPONSIBILITY IS EITHER B OR C GAP 1. KEY- NEAR BACK IS PRIMARY-SECONDARY IS OFFENSIVE LINEMAN TO SIDE YOU ARE FILLING (EITHER GUARD OR TIGHT END) 2. ALIGNMENT- 4 ½ YARDS STACKED OVER DEFENSIVE END (SPLIT HIS OUTSIDE LEG) 3. ALWAYS ATTACK DOWNHILL-NEVER PARALLEL ** EXPLAIN- STACK, SLIDE, & PULL 2X2 2X1 3X1 WHY I DONT LIKE PULL-LBERS NOT COVERED & WE HAVENT SPENT TIME TEACHING OLB 9 TECH.

BASICS OF THE DEFENSE VIII. LINEBACKERS (CONTINUED) C. STUNTING LEVELS- STACK (BASE)-WALK UP, SHOW & GO, SHOW & BAIL (EXPLAIN ALL THREE CAN BE STUNTING ROM DIFFERENT LEVELSAND WHY) ** BIG PLUS THIS YEAR- CROSS-STUNTING EX: BASE WEAK/CROSS SNAKE/COV. 1 IX. IMPORTANT CONCEPT- IM HERE-WHY- WHEN-HOW & OVER LAPPING

BASICS OF THE DEFENSE X. FALCONS (THESE ARE OUR STRONG SAFETIES). NEED TO BE THE 2 BEST PLAYERS. COMBINATION LB/DE/SS. THIS YEAR WE PLAYED A FIELD AND BOUNDRY FALCON. A. ALIGNMENT- 1. TE-SINGLE RECEIVER: 2 YARDS X 1 YARD 2. TE/WING-INSIDE FOOT TO OUTSIDE FOOT OF WINGBACK 3. TWINS- 1YARD INSIDE THE INSIDE RECEIVER AND 5/6 YARDS BACK (DOWN/DISTANCE) 4. TIGHT SLOT- 2X6 5. PRO- 4X4 OFF TIGHT END (PASSING DOWN MOVE BACK TO 6X6) 6. SPLIT END-SINGLE RECEIVER- 5X5 (DOWN/DISTANCE WILL DICTATE) ** ALIGNMENT CAN CHANGE WITH MOTION ** IF PRIMARY RUN SUPPORT WE DO NOT SPILL/WRONG ARM

BASICS OF THE DEFENSE XI. PASS COVERAGE 1. COVER 3 (3 DEEP ZONE) 2. COVER 1 (MAN-TO-MAN WITH FS) 3. COVER 0 (MAN-TO-MAN NO FS) 4. COVER 21 (2 DEEP WITH MAN-TO-MAN UNDER) 5. COVER 4 ( 4 DEEP BACKS COVERING ¼) 6. COVER 2 (2 DEEP ZONE) 7. COVER 8 (ROBBER)

BASICS OF THE DEFENSE XI. PASS COVERAGE (CONTINUED) A. SPREAD FORMATIONS SUCH AS TRIPS & EMPTY WE WANT TO USE PRESS COVERAGE- BRING 6-PRESS AND TRY TO DICTATE THE PASS OPTIONS FOR THE RECEIVERS. XII. OPTION COVERAGE- MUST WORK ON THIS IS SUMMER CAMP, 3-A DAYS, AND EVERY MONDAY DURING THE SEASON. THEY MUST KNOW THE RESPONSIBIITIES FOR DIFFERENT TYPES OF OPTIONS. ** RESORT TO OLD THEORY- NEVER LET A BACK CROSS YOUR FACE. NEVER GUESS WHETHER A BACKHAS THE BALL OR NOT

BASICS OF THE DEFENSE XIII. TERMINOLOGY FOR OUR STUNTING GAME- WE WANT THE ABILITY TO BRING 4 MAN, 5 MAN, 6 MAN, 7 MAN, AND 8 MAN PRESSURE. NG/DE- BASE, SLANT, & PINCH MLBER- MIKE STRG/WK, ZOO, SNAKE/WOLF OLBER-LION/RAM-SHARK/WEASEL- SNAKE/WOLF-BEAR-ZOO-LAKE/RIVER- SEA/WAVE FALCONS- LINDA/RITA-BETTY-SARA/WANDA- ** ADD THE TERM CROSS TO A STUNT ** ADD THE TERM CROSS TO A STUNT

BASICS OF THE DEFENSE XIV. DEFENSIVE BREAKDOWN BY POSITION COACH OCONNOR- NG/DE COACH TURNER- LINEBACKERS COACH RUDE- FALCONS COACH BEERY- DEFENSIVE BACKS DEFENSIVE PRACTICE BREAKDOWN A. CAL/FLEX B. CONDITIONING C. SPECIAL TEAMS D. INDIVIDUAL TECHNIQUE E. GROUP WORK F. INSIDE DRILL G. PERIMETER DRILL H. OPTION RESPONSIBILITIES I. ½ LINE DEFENSE J. 8-ON-7 K. PURSUIT DRILL L. FORM TACKLING DRILL/TAKE AWAY DRILL M. TEAM DEFENSE
